You learn by doing.

Honestly, you read all you want but it's different when actually doing the work yourself.

For instance, I could tell you how to pull an engine out of an FD but I've never done it. However, if you have a problem doing it, I wouldn't be able to help you if you followed the steps I told you and something else went wrong. That's the difference. Once you do it, you can troublshoot it and help others troubleshoot their problems.

Basically, it's having the ***** and the tools (workshop manual helps as well) to just go in there and break stuff.

yeah, like he said. Most people learn from doing. Its cheaper (and more fun) for me to fix my own car instead of me paying my hard earned money to someone else to fix it for me. Be patient, you can't learn it all over night.

You can download the manuals here:

http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/3rd_gen_manuals.htm

Also, the parts diagrams for locating part numbers here:

http://www.mazdaformance.com/rx7parts.htm

If you are planning on making a career out of being a mechanic, then yes you should go to school for it. Extremely doubtful that you'll deal with rotary engines while in school, however you'll get some well rounded knowledge about cars and engines that you can then apply to working on the RX-7.

how young are you? if you want to be a mechanic, you have to go to school. If you want to do anything besides flip burgers at McDonalds, then go to school.

Well first the M word is dead unless your a backyard butcher the term is Automotive Tech and were I got most of my information on Rotary and Piston engines was from Mazda were I work, but go into your local Mazda Dealer and ask one of us if He/She could teach you after hours of course (Flat Rate Sucks)

the absolute best thing you can do is get a job at a local rotary shop. You'll get to observe how things are done, see the problems that occur, and how to solve them. They probably won't hire you at 14, but if your truly interested, they'll probably let you bum around the shop and ask some questions. Whatever you do, its going to take time.
