Bought an 87 FC soooo much fun to drive, Car is everything I have been looking for. When I start the car in the morning the rpm goes straight to 1500 rpm (-15 C outside). Let car warm up for couple minutes go brush my teeth drink my coffee do whatever (usually 15 minutes or so). come back out and idle is still the same, whatever. Go to put car into reverse and rpms drop to 750, Nice. back out of drive way push in clutch and back into neutral... goes to 1500 rpm again. Drive car around for as long as I want and the car will always idle perfectly at 1500 rpm regardless of engine temp, unless it wants to randomly drop back to 750 when I pick a gear. by randomly i mean rarely, 9 times out of 10 the car stays at 1500 rpm while in gear and out of gear. I'm not even sure where to start when looking into this problem as my experience as far as working on an rx7 goes as far as changing some plugs and cleaning a carb for an FB. Any help is appreciated!

 

Maybe check the neutral switch on the gearbox?
