How reliable is a rotary
Lol a lot off different opinions....me I have an fd...stock faild on me even with all the care I have done in 60.000km then new engine sigle turbo setup with all all the mods u need so u can say im reliable but I was using in in track days every week it was 380hp that engine with lots off love and care let go on 15000km now im going on myb3 engine with even more reliable mods and will see what will happen... still love my rx7 but engine isn't a 4g63 or a sr20det...not even a honda engine I had and used and was racing
It's all in the tuning.
I don't use trailing ignition. Instead I use msd on leading.
I use premix
Stay away from junk ECUs
Motec or haltech platinum. Motec is the best.
I'm carbureted now but will be going to a Motec jay-pro setup with 8 injectors.
There's a u tube video of the Mazda trix drift car 470hp 3 seasons of drift racing
The guy who taught me to tune only breaks drive shafts. Last time I talked to him he was running 8sec 1/4miles. I've seen him go 9sec on a $300 engine made from spare parts and ran all season without a engine problem.

There are some good books on engine tuning. .
How to tune and modify engine management systems is a good book.
First part is understanding engines characteristics while tuning
Second part is understanding tuning software.
Even with my zeitronix data logger I still rely on a vacuum gauge to tell me how my engine is running. I also look at my spark plugs now and then.
Best way to learn is to meet someone who really knows what there doing and watch them.
Then find a inexpensive car and practice.
