How reliable is a rotary

I've heard so many people tell me to stay away from my rx7 that I want. They say the engine breaks down easily and that they dont last long. I wanna hear from you guys how much work does it take to keep a rotary engine running good?

Depends on how well it has been taken care of prior to you. If it was well cared for it shouldn't really be THAT different from a piston engine..if you have one like mine however...it requires a bit more effort.

It also depends which car you're going for . Turbo rotary's tend to be less reliable . and FD's even more so and expeect to do alot of reliability mods if you want to abuse on the car.

But if you just want to leave the car stock .. you aren't going to drive the living hell out of it every day . its just a bit more tedius then a regular car as you have to add oil more often . and change the oil a bit sooner.

Reliable..not at All.
Just last week my RX7 snuck out of the Garage to meet with this Mustang...I was Mad!
It got "flooded" and I think it is expecting little Geo's at any time..
(seriously,Take care of the car it takes care of you.Neglect the car,it will take care of your wallet!)

The engine isn't the problem it's the tuner. Build it right it will last forever. If u don't know how to do it urself find a tuner and check out there work. Rotaries are extremely reliable and durable if tuned correctly but few people get it right. U can beet on these engines and they can take it.

Fc is a great car. Right away I recommend full exhaust. The 5th & 6th port actuators will need to be soaked in WD-40. And if u have to take the intake apart for any reason there is a list of things u should eliminate to make the car reliable and more powerful.

With an apexi safc 2 I've seen over 190whp. Enough to touch 13sec 1/4.

/\.Yep..nothing wrong with a stock FC N/A.It is nice and reliable.
Actually that is why I got one to be my "spare car".
I built a TII out of my last N/A and it is too much to drive at times.

If the motor has good compression u can get 170to195 at the wheel which is probably close to 250 crank hp.
You'll need a full exhaust and either an apexi safc or r-tek.
This would be the easiest way to add a lot of power in a few hours work.

I might do that. I'm looking to drift so I just need power to get sideways.

When getting coilovers its smarter to not go with the cheapest. Especially cuz if u get good ones they will actually last

Honestly they are all about the same price besides tein. Tein is more expensive. Basically for drifting u just wanna look at anything that has good damper control and stiff *** springs

I'm no drifting expert but the first suspension upgrade I would do for drifting is a stiffer front sway bar.

Do your research, but realize that a LOT of FC's today have already been tampered with so there's a good chance that you can find an FC for sale that has some of the things already setup for you. That will save you a LOT of time and money.

Oh and maintenance wise, while keeping everything close to stock they are a blast and maintenance isn't any harder than any piston car, BUT the downside is the rotary will punish you if you neglect it much quicker than a piston motor so you have to bring your A game. So let the car warm up properly before pushing it, always top your oil, make sure your oil injectors are connected but I would premix anyways (look that up if you don't know what premixing is). If you go turbo you should ALWAYS run a wideband and boost gauge, an oil temp gauge wouldn't hurt either. These engines do like water/meth injection...lookup coolingmist. I've had two FC's since 2004 and have yet to blow a motor using these methods along others.

Thanks so much. This has really helped me to decide whether to go 240sx or rx7. I love the look of the rx7 way over the 240 but I wasn't sure how the engine would be for me.
