the words "reliable" and "RX-7" should never go togeather in the conventional sense. sure, they can work for long periods of time, but they are not honda reliable.

Try searching in the 3rd gen forum using words like "reliability". Further down in this forum there is a thread titled "RX-7 Life".

reliability in an RX-7 is just like reliability in any car. It depends what you plan to do to it. If you keep it stock and don't redline it several times a day every day, then it will last a good long while. It will not, however last as long as say, a Honda treated in the same fasion. But it will be a hell of a lot more fun to drive.

Oh, if you are serious about getting one, take it to the Mazda dealership and have them run a compression test (this has to be done with special equipment), this will give you a general idea of the shape of the engine. If you drive it like it should be driven (like a sports car, not a Honda) don't expect the engine to last much more than 170,000 mi. +or - 30,000 mi.
