I've been told that RX7s can go quite fast stock. I'm talking about NA 2nd gens in particular. If the engine size is only 1.3L, how can these things go fast?

 

Define "going fast"?

I doubt it.
An NA is dog slow compared to an FC turbo.
If you like speed, go with the turbo...

I like my NA FC. It is relatively fast and can get to a scary point pretty easily. It certainly doesnt compete with the turbo, but what you want depends on what you want. Just keep in mind that your 0-60 is going to be in the high 7s with an NA versus low 6s in a turbo (assuming stock).

it is pretty quick, but loses by a lot to my friends 944 turbo. It will compete with most other naturally aspirated mid end cars like BMW 318s-325.

The way they make 160hp (s5) is because the RX-7 is is exactly that, it has a rotary engine that generates more power all the time than a standard 4 strok piston engine. The relative displacement is has been proven to be in the mid 2l (according to http://rx7.com)

8000rpm is magical, vdi kicking in an an s5 in 3rd gear scares the heck out of me (~2psi natural boost) .... I like my car and am glad I chose it. Max speed is supposed to be 137mph.

 

fast is a relative term. what is fast to you, may be slow to others.

That's right. I do 85 (normally) and wonder why traffic is so slow.

 

Ok...let me ask you this! When i hit about 6500 i hear a buzzer come on. Scares me cause i'm thinking that i'm close to redline! Is this true? What is the true redline for an 87 n/a? Came across this post and just thought I would ask!

 

SEARCH! Or read some simple RX-7 documentation. It's a "Hey, you might want to shift soon" buzzer.

Redline for the S4 NA (which your car is) is technically 7000 RPM, though fuel cut is at 8000. Unless you've done some serious mods (intake, exhaust, and possibly porting), you're not making much power past 6500 RPM or so due to the engine being choked off.

Translation? The buzzer is more or less a factory shift light.
