doesnt anybody rebuild their 13b's!?!?

geeze, i tried a search and came with like 5 threads (3-4 replies each one) it seems like not a lot of people like to rebuild their 13b's - why is that? is it really *THAT* hard?

anyhow, im looking at rebuilding a 13b from a Turbo II 87 model. i dont know whats wrong with it, they said it ran but there was oil in the radiator. (leaking water seals?) are there any rebuild "tutorials" on the net? how about good books? (would a chilton or haynes be sufficient?) i just want the car to run, i dont need to run insane amounts of boost. thanks guys.

i would say FSM or Haynes, though i can't recall seeing a Haynes manual for Gen II cars, but if it's out there, then it should be good enough.

It's very easy to do... I think the thing people like about a reman engine is that you generally get some sort of warranty. I always rebuild them myself though.

Most people who are "into" RX-7s are afraid to work on them.

As opposed to domestic guys who are more than willing to tear into their engines just for the hell of it.

I built both of my engines with great success. Its very easy and straight forward. There is a rotary building video out there that is very good to watch. It is about an hour and a half long and very thorough. My friend has it. The video is by a man named Bruce Turrentine. He is in Florida. His phone number is (919) 212-0671. You can also try BruceTurrentine@aol.com Good luck.

There are three moving parts. Its not too difficult to rebuild. There is a Factory Service Manual available online here

On the right, click on How To's on the new menu that drops down, click on Manuals Then select the year you want. The manual is in PDF format so you need Adobe Acrobat reader to view it. There are about 23 chapters, each chapter is 1 file.

The rotary is the simplest engine I've ever had the pleasure to have apart. Easiest to put back together too

Well, not counting single-cylinder engines like weedwhacker motors or B&S/Tecumseh lawnmower engines... used to hotrod them until they wouldn't even start unless you did practically a teardown and rebuild first Funny how that works

Bruce Turrentine's video is very informative. He shows you how to tear the block down, recondition and rebuild the long block as well as some accessory build up ( I think you have to get his R&R video for the installation and accessory info) I bought mine from atkins rotary (www.atkinsrotary.com) and I know of a few other sites out there that carry it. I am in the same boat you are, but I want to get a 3rd gen and tear her down...

Good Luck !

I have a couple apart right now. These are the first rotary engine that I myself have taken apart, but I've seen them apart, and its not that hard to figure out whats what inside the block. With so much information around here and so many people to help you out, I don't see the need to pay a shop the extra money to do it. Its not my daily driver, and the seal kits are expensive enough as it is. Wargasm mentioned the warranty, which is a benefit to having a shop do the work, but I'm a mechanic anyway, so I trust my own hand.
