Coolant Issues/hard cold start/possible coolant leak

Hello All

Pretty new to rotarys and got myself a near fully stock 92 FD RX7. Has 3k on new rebuild and pretty much new fluids. Had an issue earlier with the add coolant light coming on. After turning off the car and back on, it dissapeared and hasn't come back on since. Got out to check underneath the car and saw a possible puddle underneath. Haven't seen any leaks since.

Drove the car back home and didn't notice any other issues or unusual temp rises. Went to check the coolant levels and wasn't quite sure whether it was low or not. Left the car for around 4 hours and then when attempted to start, had to crank for close to 5 seconds to start again. Car then started up fine when hot.

I have checked the AST cap and has a lot of rust residue around and appears to be inside. When checking the radiator filler cap I opened it with the car running and noticed it was foaming/bubbling inside.

Have already looked around the forums and have found pieces of my problem but not specifically the symptoms together. Wondered if anyone had any ideas of a potential issues or am I being too paranoid??

Cheers

If you have a puddle, find the leak, fix the leak, fill system, and bleed air. Diagnose from there.

Found out the leak wasn't from my car. So no leaks in the system, but when checking the overflow tank, the dipstick was caked in brown rust sludge. Have a photo of what it looked like after we cleaned it but was much worse before. Coolant level is still full though.

The coolant light is indicating low coolant. Even if it is off now I would still attempt to fully fill the system with a Lisle type funnel to purge all the air out of the system, or burp the car if you will.

Then I would pressure test the system and look for leaks and signs of leaks.

if all that comes back good then I would keep flushing the system until you get all that rust crap out. Then fill with fresh coolant and enjoy.

The 5 seconds to start is probably to do with something else than a little low coolant. The car is 27 years old after all.

Found the issue to the problem. The line running from the top of the AST into the overflow tank had somehow been disconnected. I reconnected that securing it tightly, topped up the coolant and haven't had any problems since!
