Hows it goin guys. I have a 86 gxl with 150000 miles that sputters after 5 minutes of idling or driving. It normally clears up after about 30 seconds of holding the pedal but when it does this it loses power or cuts off. When itry to crank it back up it takes a minute to crank and most cases i have to hold the pedal to the floor to get it fired back up and it smokes and smells like fuel. Any ideas of what to check? im kinda lost and dont want to start pulling my hair out. I changed the fuel pump and filter 2 years ago, new test pipe from atkins rotary (still have stock muffler and header) new plugs 2 years ago and i think thats about it. Any help would be appreciated.
i had one once where the fuel filter rusted out internally and plugged itself. it would start and run fine and then just gradually get slower.
another suggestion is that you might put a timing light on it, if you can narrow it down to spark or fuel, that would help
I haven't done much on the timing side. However i was considering checking the injectors to see if they were leaking.I checked the top injectors once. but didn't check the bottom ones.

whats the best way to check the spark on this thing?
he could always hold a plug wire and have someone turn the key. kind like licking a 9 volt times 100. (JK- DO NOT DO THIS)
changing the plugs would be #1 on my list as you know they are gummed up from flooding.
while they are out you can just position a plug wire (seperately...one at a time) near the frame or anythin metal on the car that is grounded really....roughly 1/4 inch away from the grounded part you choose. It should arc fairly strongly.
just try not to do it too close to the plug hole as there may be fuel vapors in there.
Ok i changed my air filter cause i couldn't see through it. I fired it up and got a spark tester to check spark. I have spark on all plugs. i let it idle for about ten minutes and it cut off. now i see that i have raw fuel coming out of the exhaust and it wont crank back up. it didn't sputter like it normally would when i have the issue. it just died.
So now my question is, is there a sensor or something that would make it dump fuel. This issue just started last week as the temp down here has gotten hotter (i live in the south). I did change the temp sensor by the alternator maybe two years ago. Could it be a bad throttle position sensor or vane air sensor?
SATCH WHERE YA AT BUDDY????

How do you know raw fuel is coming out of the exhaust? elaborate... from the rear of the car?
if there is RAW FUEL coming out I would focus on those aspects. I do not remember if this model is a 6 port, put if so, you may want to make sure the secondaries intake ports are working/not stuck closed.
I'll let someone else explain better, but I would look at anything that could be either causing an air restriction or fuel overload. I doubt it is an O2 sensor though.
Raw fuel as in it starts smoking fromn the tail pupe and it smells like unburned fuel. it is a 6 port. the secondaries are in the lower intake right? Cause i do know that the actuators for the ports are working
have you looked at the catalytic converter to see if it is getting too hot?
it runs and then chokes out not long after. I would look at the cat. they can get so hot they glow and choke the motor out.
the secondaries are on the top side of the intake......but after thinking on it. If the car is just idling and still shuts off I would not worry about the 6 port. They are closed at low rpm, so that rules that out. If they were stuck open it would not matter, I ran mine wired open for years.
