3rdgen auto/man trans conversion

Hello out there..new to the site and the rx7 world.. I am trying to find my first rx7. I have been looking now for a month or so trying to find something that is in my budget and that I can build up. So far everytime I find a rx7 in my price range it is a auto tranny..Was curious on your input on converting a auto trans to manual trans! I have been told by one shop so far the it is very costly and time consuming(not worth it). Any information would be greatly appreciated?

I do plan on removing the entire drive train and building the car from scratch!

THANKS-Michael

good question. i've thought of the same thing, even though i'm not exactly in the market there was a nice vintage red '93 R1-look for sale near me, and when i checked it out, it had only 12k miles, and was in IMMACULATE condition, but was asking $24k firm (looked at the info sheet under the rear hatch before actually looking inside it). i thought "way out of my range, even with help from the parents" but read the options list on it anyway... then i hit "automatic transmission" and nearly puked. looked into the driver window to double-check, and my heart dropped. which is partly the reason i call it an "R1-look", i don't think he listed it as an R1, but i thought it was when i first saw it due to the exterior. the R1's didn't come with an auto gearbox or the Bose wave system did they?

anyhow enough with my ramblings, most auto-to-manual conversions are tough, and with the PPF (power plant frame) in the way i think it might be a bear to do. but if you are ripping the drivetrain out anyway it might not be so bad... anyone on here able to help this guy out?

George Dodsworth from that store does a lot, some of the members of the forum. I plan on switching my auto fd to 4.33 gears in (hopefully!) 6 months. They quote about 1300 labor, and ask you to find the parts (you should be able to for a little over 1000)

I suggest searching for "tranny", "transmission", "switchover", and the like...

If it had leather, Bose, sunroof, and auto tranny, then it was probably a Touring package. I've got the same car, and I really want a manual tranny, but somehow I'm not complaining.

I have been looking and looking for more info on tranny conversions...no luck! Looks like it is just to much of a pain than anything.

I talked to one person that knew someone that did this and they said that the work was way extreme specially when it came to the $$.

Well the search goes on for a manual tranny!

Don't despair, there is yet light at the end of the tunnel.

Assuming it's a 3rd gen swap...

Keep trying the search function as well.
