2nd Gen, NA to TII?
Hey,
I want to put together a new setup on my 87 GXL NA and begin some amature racing (just for fun) and any setup is acceptable, as in no limits on modds but watch the cash
I'm having a hard time finding an NA engine and everything that comes in from japan is turbo charged.
Anyone with any tips, i want to carbeurate the engine, what mods do i need to make and should i keep the turbo for racing or change them up? (so yeah, i want to work with TII because that's all i can find)
note: my father (innovatic mechanic) and i are gonna do all the labour but we haven't done much modding on rx's.
Thanks in Advance, ped
PS. extra thanks to all those who replied to my last post and persuaded me to stay with rotary powa.

also, i want to avoid turbos because they do complicate things, but perhaps there are kits that are reliable for racing and won't cause too much engine wear. so what fuel mods, etc etc.

turbo's and carby's arent a good combo. i would keep the t2 injection. are you going to be racing it a specific class? or just for fun, it will make a big difference in the setup of the car

Oh yeah. I wanted to pop a TII into my '87 GXL (which is currently N/A). But i was wondering the labor involved? is it a fairly straightforward task, or what?

i want to race mostly just for fun, but i've heard that a lot has to be changed with a swap. injectors make the car so complicated with the wiring and computer.... and i'm bound to run into problems. I know turbo's don't really go well with carbs, so i'm thinkin of just runnin a 90 turbo engine without the turbo's. i think i'll need to change the tranny and diff, right?

Rotors still spinning

If you run a T-II 4 port engine without the turbos then you will be slower than the stock 6 port engine assuming of course you are not porting the 4 port. The reason is that the 4 ports (turbo engines) have lower compression rotors that the 6 ports. If you use the n/a rotors inside the 4 port motor it would work great. You can then adapt the 6 port intake mainfold with a little bit of port matching to fit the 4 port motor and use the stock efi. It would work great and has been done before.
The tranny, clutch, and flywheel need to be changed. You can use the driveshaft from an automatic to make everything fit the stock diff.

If you want a TII trans in a N/A car.....you need a TII drive train. Have fun...and don't try to take the center diff out without dropping the rear subframe! Been there done that!

Er, I was under the assumption that the N/A pumpkin can take the power of the TII. I thought it was only the tranny that cannot handle the power? or is it a case of a TII drveshaft not mating up with a N/A diff.? if so then.. ****! this is gonna be harder than i thunked.

The N/A drive shaft will not slide into the N/A trans....and why not do it right.....there is a great difference in a totally TII drivetrain in a N/A car......I also have TII brakes front and rear on my 90 GTU.....talk about kickin brakes for next to nothing!! I have seen instructions on how to do the TII drivetrain mod and there are a lot of factors involved....if you guys have any questions I will answer them to the best of my ability.....since no one was there to help me.....three well known shops told me it wasn't a possible upgrade.....WRONG!!

Ok, if you are going to run a carb and no turbo your NA driveline will be just fine. You will have to use the flywheel and clutch from the NA, though, to match up to that NA tranny.
The NA clutch, tranny, AND differential are all too weak for a decent running turbocharged engine. I turbo'd my '91 6 port and smoked a sport clutch, ripped all the teeth off the countershaft in the tranny, and the pic below should about cover the strength of the diff...
