Unhappy 13b 1 gen idle and accelerating problem

Hi I am having a perplexing problem with my 84 se. When the car is idling it idles like an impatient honda waiting for a green light, IE it sounds like I am blipping the throttle from 1000-1500 rpm. When accelerating with part throttle (like behind a truck) the engine alternately hesitates then surges(normal power). Under full throttle acceleration all is fine in the world and smiles all around. When criusing (regardless of speed) with part throttle the engine again looses power for a few seconds then surges and repeats this untill I floor it. BTW the plugs, rotor.cap, wires, and fuel filter are new. Any insights would be of great interest

Yep. I also think it sounds like the throttle position sensor. There is a good thread on TPS adjustment in the first gen archive. Hope this helps.

Check to see if you have a vacuum leak. Also check your thermo pellet and Bac valve if it looks nasty with anti-freeze gunk on it it probably one of those two. Also check the solenod under the BAC valve also. When my 7 was acting the same way it was that solenoid.

Surging.... is your ignition coil stock... try getting MSD... I had a problem with surging... it went away after a things were changed such as the rotor, wire, spark plug, and of course ignition coil.... get everything set back... the AAS... the variable resistor and of course the TPS... check your Air FLOW meter... see if its still has the perfect resistance....

TPSTPSTPSTPS same thing with my car. Your throttle stop is probably too open, and tps is out of adjustment. You need that FAQ search the archieves. Its very easy to do. I adjusted my TPS with 1 multimeter in about 20 minutes (the first time..) Just take your time, get the idle down to about 700 rpms and it will be nice and steady.
