MPG question

no this isn't a normal 'how many mpg do you get' question, it's more of a theory. i know rotaries get crap gas mileage, but would it be feasable for mazda (or an EMS) to shut off every other combustion cycle while cruising? if this is confusing here's my explanation

this is per rotor mind you. here's the firing of the sides:
1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3 etc

now my idea is to simplify it when you don't need 360 degrees of power
1, ,3, ,2, ,1, ,3, ,2, , etc
i suppose it would be similar to what GM likes to do by shutting off a cylinder bank.

so has this been thought of or am i smart?

mind-thief! actually i was thinking exactly the same thing the other day, particularly in relation to a 20b, where you'd likely be hard-pressed to know the difference on stable-speed cruising... it'd p[robably work really well cruise control/ auto...
Anyone out there, know how you'd implement this?

1) That would probably make the car not maintain the cruise status.
2)that would essentialy kill your engine because of the lack of lubrication in that #2 cumbustion cycle because of the lack of gas and oil being injected into the chambe(if you would maintain the oil injection for luubrication you would pobably ge massive carbon build up or a big *** oil slick out your exhaust.
3) Rotaies can get good mileage for a sports car: I get 20MPG I have a friend that got 22MPG how many corvettes do you know that get that? You need to fixe your car first then bitch about the mileage and never generalize about a car's performance because it could be something wrong with yours that you need to fix i.e. O2 sensor, injectors, tune-up, etc.

EDIT: Rotaries do not provide power through 360 degrees of the rotarion of the e-shaft it is 270 degrees.

well i don't know how you're getting that the combustion chambers will get all dry since every rotor face will still recieve gas and oil.
by 360 i was comparing it to a piston which normally has half the power cycles than a rotary.
and modern C5s get 30+ mpg highway which is my intent.

Ok then how are you going to save gas if all the faces still get gas and oil? Oh and did you ever stop and think about the fact that we are using almost 20year old technology compared to a C5. I believe the Renesis gets about 27MPG how about that.

Anyways, my friends cammed ls1 (some vettes had ls1's, some had 6s) gets about 18mpg with light driving. Pretty damn good IMO.

since i've seen no renesis EPA numbers, i'm not too sure of the 27mpg, but if it is that high i'll eat my words. read above, in 4 revolutions there are half as many fuel points but all the faces get gas.

I fail to understand what you mean. I am pretty sure you thought it through but I don't get it. If you still give all the faces oil and gas then you are still waisting that gas.

Dude thats going to make fuel economy worse and emissions worse. Lets go thru this step by step:

Bad fuel economy: By your standard, you are injecting just as much gas but only burning 1/2 of it, requiring you rev the motor more to accelerate. Still more gas is being injected.

Bad emissions: All that spare unburnt gas is going to ignite in the cat or once it exits the muffler

read above. in a normal engine the faces of the rotor are getting both gas and spark at
1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3 intervals
by removing the fuel and spark from every other face you get
1, ,3, ,2, ,1, ,3, ,2, , intervals
both of these setups are over 1080 degrees of rotor rotation. however, half the fuel is used, and as you can see, every rotor face recieves fuel, albeit half the time.

is it still confusing?

it would be hard to stop the injectors for exactly one rotor face, an eaiser way would be to shut down one rotor during highwayu driving, youd get mad pumping loss, but youd probably get a 30% increase in mileage. you could have a dfash mounted switch that cuts the front rotors spark, then a few milli seconds latter cuts fuel and then figure out a way to have the oil injectors inject a lil oil like every 10 mins and your good to go

what vette came with a 6 cylinder. they havent had 6's in anything except old school prototypes. and my heads, cam and full bolt on trans am ws6 ls1 made 26mpg on a road trip to new york with 440rwhp to boot... my rx7 of equal power is lucky to get 15mpg at 60mph

By LS1 and 6 he meand LS1 and LS6

Vettes get good milage! The EPA rated the Z06 at I think 28 HWY, that is awsome for a 405 HP monster. I wish my FD could do that, I hit about 22 on the highway if I am lucky.

Like drago said, I think it would be hard to implement a system to stop the injectors for every other face, but you could somehow cycle one of the rotors on and off. Probably switch whick one was running every couple seconds or something to ensure even wear. Figure out how to implement it with a switch for when you are less than 20% throttle or something.
