12a won't start

My 12a in a 1981 rx7 won't start. I can sit there and crank it and feed it gas and it'll smoke and pop and bang. I have checked spark, done the timing and tried multiple different ways of timing, I have put ATF in to try to build up the compression, I have added more grounding straps, I have cleaned up the cap and rotor. This car I bought with no motor and I put a used 12a in that said "ran when pulled". After I got it in I did a full emissions delete and cleaned it up. I had plans with the car but I just can't get it started. So if anyone was anything for me to try I would love to hear it!

I have cranked it with the plugs out and it all sounded even.

Have you checked the plugs to ensure the engine is not flooded? With the ATF in the combustion chamber, the plugs can foul causing a no start.

Has the carb ever been rebuilt? Are you getting fuel to the carb when cranking?

No need to mess with the timing on an engine that is not running. I would put it back to where it was originally. Timing is fine tuned sith the engine at idle and at normal operating temperature.

Had a similar issue after my rebuild, I used some ether spray (starting fluid) down the inlet to see if I could at least get it to try and run.

The golden bullett... new plugs.
