Question Newbie needs help.. QUICK!- like TONIGHT...

Hey Guys-

Thanks for looking. I'm scheduled at 9 am tomorrow to see an 83 rx7, there are 4 others scheduled to see it tomorrow. The car looks great, has a new tranny and clutch, and everything works. Its going for 1 grand. My very newbie question is, are there any major things I should look for and check out during my time to see it? Anything would be helpful.

By the way, I'm sure ill get asked, the lady put the ad in the paper a week ago, and told every one who responded to come on Sunday, at different times. First one to offer is the winner, and I'm first. Thanks again.

83
standard
sun roof
cd player

A compression test, but that would take time to do. See if you can take if for a drive long enough to warm the engine up and see that it doesn't overheat, smoke, rattle, vibrate in an unusual way, etc. A little blue, or bluish white smoke on start up is normal, but if it smokes like a chimney, or puffs out a cloud when you shift gears, then some of the seals are going. Check normal stuff like leaks in the engine bay.
Thats all I can think of. Good luck, and if you get it take pics and show us.

Look for sludge all over the motor, pay attn to where it says mazda on the rotor housing start it up and let it run, look for oil leaks... Make sure the engine is cold, and check to see if it smokes when you start it.

I would say look for rust, but I dont imagine thats gonna be a problem where you are...

Drive it, and see what you think, if its truely pristine, a grand is pretty good price

What project said, and also ...

Check for rust behind the storage bins (located behind the front seats -- someone else will have to help you with how to take them out tho, as my 79 doesn't have bins), rust on the rear quarter panels/wheel well area. Other than that, and the stuff Project mentioned, pretty much the same stuff you would check with any car (how it drives/feels, brake feel etc etc...)

*Edit: Dang, Mike beat me to posting second, so now I should amend my post to say "what project and Mike said, and also ... *

Here's an option for you to look at, it's for sale in L.A.

100,000 miles on current engine (280,000 total). Am /Fm/Cassette and sunroof
(include original hardtop) . New tires, radiator, starter, brakes this year.
Still looks and runs great, but has oil leak that will need to be dealt
with. Original owner - wants to find good home !

$800

A few pics:

PM me and I can send you the number where to reach the owner.

whew!! I bought my car with 270,000 miles on it.

I had to get all new suspension, new diff, and a million other things just to get it going again!! Took me almost 2 years to get it up and running! I still haven't gotten around to fixing the steering box yet, though.

Also, run it with the windows down, and listen for any unusual noises. Mine had a small exhaust leak that, while not serious enough to cause mechanical trouble, did sound really annoying when i was driving with the windown down (which I was doing a lot, since it was summer, and I hadn't gotten my A/C fixed yet). Mine sounded a little bit like a whistle, but listen for anything out of the ordinary.
