GT 35/40 - Slight Shaft Play - Normal?

Hey All,
So I entered my car in a show yesterday and pulled off the air filter because...well, it just looks cooler without the filter. Anyway, my buddy pointed out to me that there was a little shaft play when you wiggle it. It's very subtle...Like less than 1/8th MM play...I looked on the compressor housing and it was not scarred or scratched where the fins pass over...

Is this normal? is it fooked or getting fooked?

Mine has play front to back, but not side to side or not noticeable at least.

Can you make the shaft “clunk” from side to side against the bearing? I don’t think that would be good! I am assuming that they are a press fit bearing and that they shouldn’t have very much play at all especially since they are a ball bearing turbo as opposed to a busing type like most.

No...Not clunking. It's barely moving but just a tad from side to side but not hitting anything. Hard to explain it but it's not much...I might just be over paranoid.

I have brand new GT35R's and they have play in all dirrections (bearing clearances). I had another GT45BB unit and it had the same amount of movement in both directions.

Nothing realy to worry about, bearing and races need clearance to not sieze.

apneblue I am in the market for a GT35/40R. I have a line on a new one for $1200 and some change. Did you pay close to that. Only reason I ask is that I have seen price differences on these up to 1000 dollars.

Metals expand when hot. So there will be clearence when cold such that when the turbo is humming along merrily and things are nice and warm and toasty the whole enchilada doesn't size up. Some shaft play when cold is perfectly normal.

Yep, perfectly normal and nothing to really be concerned about. Only when the play is excessive should you worry.

A little side to side is normal but in and out is bad.

You shouldnt have any front to back movement (from turbine housing to compressor housing direction movement). Your thrust bearing might be on its way out. Does your car smoke oil? It might not be bad yet but its prob going to get worse making your car smoke and your turbo sound like a dentist drill when you get into pressure. If that starts happening its from the thrust bearing.

Before I bought my gt40r I checked around and one thing I was told by several dealers was the ball bearing turbos will have more play in them compared to thrust bearing's. Seems many get concerend over this...

Yea, somewhat. I finally started to build a little motivation again. I've got my fuel pumps in the car and wired up so thats a start. Now I'm working on some new cooling system stuff and a V mount. It'll prob still take a while though cause I just stay so dang busy I dont have time to work on it much, just an hr here and there. But yea, I decided its been sitting long enough and I need to do somting with it.
