12A Dist and SDS

Ok, I've been fighting with wiring for 3 weeks now to get my stock ecu to work with my sds fuel setup. It worked for a little while then just stopped one day. What I want to do now is put the distributor direc fire setup in. What all is needed for the swap over. Will my current FC coils work with it, basically what is all needed to do the switvh over, until i get a better setup.

Your leading coils will work with an MSD and direct fire but you'll need different trailing coils. the factory dist. can't run them. Resistance is wrong. The timing mark on the dist. that you use when the dist. is out is in a physically different location from the mark on the crank angle sensor. The 12a or early 13b main pulleys timing marks correspond with this. If you try to put the dist. in with your stock pulley and adjust the timing you will end up off by about 15 to 20 degrees even thought your marks say otherwise. Had this problem on my GSL-SE when I tried to use my 2nd gen pulley. Marks were different. To answer your question better you need a dist. stock leading coil (or 2 blasters), 2 blaster coils for trailing, early (pre-86) main pulley, 5 spark plug wires. and an MSD if you are going to direct fire. If you try to use the dlidfis form of direct fire system then you can't use stock coils.

Good information about the the timing marks. I have a 88 turbo motor in my 83 with sds. I am currently using the 83 dist.. Your information explained why I had a hard time with dist. timing. I am one tooth off at the dist. I usually line the dot and the mark up on the dist. before insurting it. But with my set up I had to turned the gear on the dist. one tooth counter clock wise before dropping it in. (rotor facing up) I am now using the two timing marks on the 88 pulley. I beleive the timing is correct because if I try to adjust the timing 10 deg. either way the idle is bad. I have the leading timing right on the first mark. Trailing is 10 deg. after the first mark. Idle is fine and good power past red line. I am not using the vaccum advance only mechanical.

I don't know if you were refering to 2nd gen coils in your post, but you can use stock 1st gen coils with DLIDFIS.

Yeah I guess you can. I was just throwing ideas out assuming there was nothing to begin with but yeah I was referring to the 2nd gen coils. Actually I've heard that blaster coils don't work with the dlidfis as well as the stock 1st gen coils do but I have no proof of this.

Niether do I, since I've never tried them personally. But then again, it's not like I need to. I've got enough stock 1st gen coils to last a long time.

Do you have any more information about the differences between 12A and early 13B pulley timing marks compared to the 2nd gen pullies? I'm going to put an '83 pulley on a '91 engine for testing purposes.

I wish I had marked it when they were both off the car. I'll see what I can do this week to figure it out.

Just an update to my wanting to try an '83 pulley on a '91 engine. It ain't gonna happen. The bolt pattern is different as in the spacing between the pulley mounting bolts is different on the '91, and the same on the '83 engine. They're not compatible unless they're ovaled. Then you'll end up with something that may not be very accurate. I guess you could try swapping the actual front thing itself (don't know its name). However, the timing marks are still different from '85 to '86. My advice: don't mix 'n match unless it's unavoidable. If you already knew this, sorry for making you read through it

Yup you have to use the whole pulley "assembly" and not just that "front thing" On a 2nd gen. the "front thing" is a part of the first pulley and the underdrive attaches to it. If you still have a/c, the a/c pulley from a 2nd gen is much smaller. A shorter belt would be needed as well. The 2nd. gen pulley's 4 holes only line up one way so as not to confuse it. The 1st gen pulley can line up in any direction so make sure you know where the marks are supposed to be.

Check out the funky offset of the main pulley compared to the water pump:

Question JC Cosmo 13B-RE trouble

Hi there, I looked at the pic you had posted and it looks just like a 13B-RE motor out of a JC Cosmo. Is that it ? Also, I'd like to know what experiences you've have with those engines as well. I am presently experiencing a bit of trouble with one at the moment in my Cosmo and was wondering if you'd be able to lend any assistance. AT cold start, the enigne initally idles up then shuts off, as if its being fouled with excess fuel, judging from the smell of the exhaust fumes. Also the idling hunts a lot and even when it reaches normal operating temps. it still hunts at idle. I checked for vacuum leaks but haven't come across any yet. I also cleaned the injectors thinking that maybe they were dribbling, but no luck with that. I am now completely frustrated with the damn ting.
