Anyone know about VATN turbos?

Made by aerocharger
I was reading about em in my Maximum Boost book
supposedly there is no need for a wastegate and it has a simulated varying A/R.
Like a twinscroll only variable, smoother, and better.
Anyone have any info at all on these things?
And who makes em, how much, and why have'nt I heard much about them before.

vatn turbos

The early miata turbo kits used them and they get used by Mr Turbo for their motorcycle kits. the turbos have a self lubricating ball bearing. With the oil fed by a wick. I don't know if anyone has used them on a rotary. But from what I hear their fragile and expensive. I would think you would need to use two for a rotary.

I have an Aerodyne / Aerocharger model 66000 on my Z3.

Advantages.... INSTANT boost. Great for simple bolt on applications.

Disadvantages.... poor reliablity at boost levels >10 psi., BIG turbos (size/weight), expensive... jobber price around $1000. Complicated to get just right.

Other companies make Variable vane turbos but still a llittle expensive. BMW uses one on their large diesels, 5 and 7 series. Also Garrett has one but I believe it is not for sale yet.

$1000?

Compared to the ball bearing GT turbos from Garrett, $1000 sounds like an absolute steal.

They used one on the SCC Project MR2 awhile back. It provided lots of more power down low but had trouble holding a consistently higher boost pressure 16+ andwould fluctuate greatly.

thanks, just checking to make sure I wasn't passing up on anything.
I'm still thinking RX6 is the best choice for what I want.
but I still need to learn more about the t04r
t04r is ball bearing, right?
anyone have a cyno sheet or any numbers for the t04r
I want boost pretty early on, 400rwhp on race gas at whatever boost, im guessing 20psi or so
12 for street driving, 15 for street racing/track and 20 for the strip

I'm probably off on my boost numbers but 400rwhp is what im shooting for max.

Node,

If 400 RWHP is all that you are looking for then the RX6 is for you.
My FD with the RX6, ported low compression engine, Haltech.... blah blah blah.... made 417 Corrected 443 Uncorrected RWHP at 15 psi on 89octane fuel.

The apex is very hard to beat on the streetabilty issue with a good ported motor and tuning you should be able to reach 450rwhp that was my intentions but I'm looking into a TO4R right now should be pretty close to the apex but offer more boost up high. If you have any Q's about either let me know.

Apex single for sale if interested.(low low miles)

417 rwhp @ 15psi?!?!? damn thats nice
and why you risking the 89 octane man?

Hopefully if this turns out right this will be on a streetported 13BT in a FC

3 piece 2 mm Mazda Apex seals

I'm thinking of going w/ a single Apex muffler, 2 into 1 towards the rear for low and midrange torque

haltech from the beginning of modding phase

apexi power/super intake w/ super suction (if i find out if it works or not)

Not sure about radiator and intercooler, thinking it would be nice to stay Apex'i but maybe a ARC or Spearco would be nice.

I was planning on getting a 89 or 90 T2 w/ blown engine and buy a streetported 13bt from pineapple. But seeing as to my current school situation. senior year, 7am-2:34, then stay at school till 5pm to makeup 2 classes, then getting 150hrs community service to graduate, looks like I won't have a job anymore but I'm graduating so thats all that matters, hopefully my parents will feel sorry for me and get me a series 4 N/A ;-P

Are you sure the community service wasn't for dressing up the neighbor's dogs?

Because, that is Korean Premium gas. I would love to run better fuel and more boost but I've got no choice.. Oh unleaded race fuel is available.... at $50 a gallon.

Some Shelby Dodges came with VATN turbos... I *think* they were the twin-cam Turbo IV's (yes, there were Turbo I's, II's, and III's too) and they're really rare but they worked GREAT. Dodge was making 224hp with a wiiiiiide powerband.

vatn turbos

A friend of mine bought one of those dodge/garrett turbos to put on his miata. It was pretty damn small like t2 or t25 on the compressor. You aparntly can't upgrade the comressor because the bearings will fail. I'm trying to get some info on a large vatn turbo right now. Its made by holset they aparrantly launched it this year. The hy55 is based on the fixed geometry version hx55. the hx55 will support upto 800hp. And is similair in size to a to4s. I don't know comressor or turbine specs yet but I should be hearing back by next week. If I can get my hands on one I'm going to give it a try. Only one way to find out if something will work.

We use an aerocharger on the race car that I help build at school. The thing spools damn fast!!! It is bad as hell cause when we shut the car off you hear a long PPPSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHH as the turbo spools down!! And that is from idle. The first time we fired up the car we were all like WTF ??THAT IS AWESOME!!!!!! when we heard it the first time.

Here are some more stats on the car if you are interested.

His 89 is a true rating unlike our 93 which really is around 89.
