Learning How To Tune

Hello,

I am on a quest I am going to try and learn how to tune my car.

I searched on this forum for information to get me started, but didn't find a whole lot of "precise" information.

Can anyone give me pointers on where to look for literature, web sites, Etc... That deal with how to tune. Specifically how to tune a high performance vehicle with a Stand Alone EMS?

I do need to start at the very beginning, so I also need info on straight tuning theory. You know, like what is AFR, and what does it do

If it matters, I have a PFC....

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Learning How To Tune

Your local university or technical college may offer courses in this subject. You can probably search the internet and your local library for information on internal combustion engine theory, but learning practical applications and techniques is going to require hands-on training. If you can't attend a technical college course, then the next best thing is to have a friend show you how to tune.

This AEM document is a good starter:

I don't have any friends At least not any that tune, or will show me how to tune.

I checked out the link you gave me. Looks like a real good starter. Printing it up as we speak. Thanks

Anyone else got links or info I might find helpful?

Look at the AEM EMS forum website. They have great info and support. Very helpful people on there.
Search for info on how to tune Hondata on honda websites. Tuning Hondas is so well covered and explained its rediculous. Most of what you read about how to tune them applies for any platform including rx-7s. Just have to remember 7s are more sensitive to tuning so you have to be more conservative with timing and tune way richer.
Try your local book store. Most modern performance books have sections of tuning EMS.
If you try looking for rx7 specifc info you'll have a harder time. It seems to me that most people messing with EMS for 7s already have backrounds in tuning other cars.

Towards the end there is a link to another great thread about tuning ignition timing.

If you like to read try "How To Tune & Modify Engine Management Systems" By Jeff Hartman. Its got more about EMS then you'll ever need and it was published in 03 so its all good. I got it at B&N for $30.
It has a website on the back you can probably order it from:

I agree. I'm reading it right now. Check page 125, right hand column 1st to 3rd paragraphs. It'll put everything into perspective for you.

Just so you guys know... it looks like there is a 2004 for edition out.

Also... if you have never used AddAll.com USE IT. Best book price searching engine EVAR! Search by ISBN, Author, Title... I buy a ton of IT books and normally get 50-75% off by using the site.

Paul Yaw is an long time engineer, I recommend reading his write-ups. Learn about porting, ignition timing vs. torque, Volumetric efficiency, how to find degrees on the crank, etc...

Also he building up a supercharged RX-8 motor to race @ Speed World Challenge.
