Choice in EMS?

Well, I will be going standalone very soon and was wondering what the preference here is for tuning capabilities, ease of tuning, installation time and overall advantages and disadvantages of each. I know of Haltech, Microtech and have heard of somethig called Wold 3D I think. My goal is basically to control 550 primaries (stock) and 1600cc secondaries so that I can fuel my turbo for 400rwhp. Can you help me out?

What about Haltech installation+tuning, Is it user friendly for a novice owner like me or is it strictly dyno/pro tuner tuned? Is it tunable with a laptop?

Where can I find more information on the Haltech and what version would best suit my application. (controlling 550cc primaries and 1600cc secondaries) Thanks for your help.

Those are all good brands that have proven to work well with the rotary engine. You can research the various products to see what you like, but it is usually best to choose whichever EMS is supported by your local rotary tuner because these things are extremely difficult to set up properly.

J-Spec only. I hear you can get them, but at the prices I have seen, you are better off with your original 3 choices of Haltech, Microtech, and Wolf.

All of the Haltech, Microtech, and Wolf EMS products are tuned by a laptop, while Microtech and Wolf also offer a hand controller.

All of the current standalone EMS products are best left to the professionals. If you are good at electrical wiring (know how to use shrink wrap, solder, crimp terminals, etc.) then you can probably handle the installation yourself, but tuning is another story. Somebody of average technical skill and automotive understanding could handle an EMS if helped by a mentor, but trying to figure it out on your own is an uphill battle that will probably result in a lot of frustration and/or a blown engine. It would probably be a good idea to price installation and tuning in your local area before you buy an EMS. Also be sure to check into package deals that include the EMS, installation, and tuning, as this is sometimes less expensive than buying the EMS somewhere else and paying for the installation and tuning later.

We have EMS subforums for specific topics. (AEM and Power FC are for the 3Gen RX-7)
