can onyone help identify this ecu on my n/a fc ?

Hi Folks,

i posted this in the new members forum
https://www.rx7club.com/new-member-rx-7-technical-256/any-idea-what-aftermarket-ecu-unit-my-fc-984578/
and Aaron Cake recommended that i post it here.

i have an n/a fc that i bought and it has an aftermarket ecu in it.

it runs really rich on idle so i thought that i would disconnect it and connect up a standard ecu but it would only crank over and not start with the standard ecu.

the car had an aftermarket pod filter on it and after checking the fsm it showed that i am missing the air flow meter so i guess thats why it wouldnt start with the standard ecu.

my dad was told by someone who works at haltech programming ecu's that it sounds like an old ecu as it has a serial port and not a usb port.

below are 3 pics of the ecu and 2 pics of the intake with the plug for the afm.

any help identifying my ecu would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
David.

It looks a bit like an older Stinger EMS ecu. You might want to take better pictures and email the local ozzy brands and see if anyone recognizes it. The standard fuel injection system is very, very finicky so I'd look into getting a tune on this and just keeping the stand alone.

old haltech is usually a black case with a different extrusion ,, can you slide the case off to get some ID underneath ?

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies.

I Hate Ricers, it looks like i will have to get it tuned by a rotary shop as im lost when it comes to efi systems, i understand how they work but really dont know how to work on them, by the way, what is a stand alone ?

felix is alive, if its possible that it has an internal map sensor, is that why there is no air flow meter on the car ?

bumpstart, looks like i will have to pull it out and see if there is any identifying marks underneath it or see if i can take the aluminium case off and see inside it if there are any identifying marks.

Thank again for the replies,
Greatly Appreciated,
David.

Hi Folks,
an update,

i pulled out the ecu and pulled it apart and took some pics.

the only thing i could find on the board was "sparkdog" and various letters and numbers.

below are the pics.

i did a search and found this thread
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...light=sparkdog
but it wasnt very helpful.

i will do some more searching and see how i go but if anyone can add any info it would help.

also, i did a few vids of the car running and was wondering how do i upload vids, youtube ?

Thanks,
David.

i couldnt find anything on google for this manufacturer except this site,
http://sparkdog_8.tripod.com/products.htm
i sent them an email and it bounced back.

the ecu in the pic has a very similar case but is painted orange.

i also found this site,
http://www.mdac.com.au/index.htm
and sent them an email as they mention sparkdog ecu's but that also bounced.

i have tried google, ask and bing and no luck.

is there any software i can use to tune this or do i specifically need sparkdog software ?

Thanks,
David.

here are the youtube links,

sorry about the sound quality, i used my samsung galaxy phone and its the best i could get.

you can see by the exhaust vids that its running very rich on idle.
also, in the last vid, i bring it up to 3000 rpm and it dies then gets back up to 3000 rpm and dies again so i let the throttle off to idle, i then bring it steadily up to 3000 rpm again and accelerate more and it goes to 5000 rpm.

i dont know if maybe it has a blocked fuel filter or something or its the engine management, it doesnt run very smoothly or reliably.

Thanks,
David.

Hi EB Turbo,
yes i found that link and tried sending an email to them but i got an email failure notice.
i then tried to contact them through their ebay account and the guy got back to me with his email address but ebay removed the email address so i couldnt read it so i sent him another message to try and contact me.
he said he didnt know that the email link on his site was down so i will try and see if its working now.
Thanks.

Hi Folks,
just an update.
i spoke to the guy and he said that it was an old sparkdog sdr unit and unfortunately he doesnt have the software for it so im screwed.
looks like i will have to try and get it running on the standard ecu i have but first i need an afm, just waiting for a board member to get back to me about it.
just a quick question, would a microtech lt8 or ltx12s be good for my car ?
the reason i ask is because the guy i spoke to suggested running a microtech as a cheap alternative and there are alot on ebay fairly cheap.
Thanks.
