any idea what aftermarket ecu unit this in my fc
any idea what aftermarket ecu unit this in my fc
Hi Folks,
here are some pics of the engine ecu in my n/a fc rx7.
i dont know what brand it is and was hoping that someone could help me identify it.
the car runs very rich on idle.
i tried disconnecting it and connecting up a standard n/a ecu but the car would only crank over and not start.
i later realized that there is no afm (air flow meter) as it had a pod filter air cleaner on it when i bought it and when i bought a standard air box to get it ready for registration i noticed there was something missing so i did some research and found that the afm is missing.
below are 2 pics showing the air intake without the afm and what looks like the plug that plugs into the afm.
is it normal to remove the afm when putting an aftermarket ecu ?
hope these are not dumb questions as i left the mechanic trade just when cars being made with electronic fuel injection started becoming more available (1991) but i do have some understanding of how they work but very limited knowledge regarding modifying them.
when i was playing around with rotaries the standard practice was to port the engine, put on a 48mm ida weber and if you wanted more power you bored them out to 51mm and add a free flowing exhaust with extractors and put in an electronic ignition. also a steel flywheel, brass clutch and a stronger, high rpm proof pressure plate.
any help would be greatly appreciated in helping identify the ecu and info on the afm.
Thanks,
David.

Hmm, I don't recognize the case nor the connectors. Maybe someone else will.
Have you opened it up? There may be a brand on the board.
Also, try posting in the EMS forums because someone there may know.

Hi Aaron Cake,
no i havent pulled it apart to see inside what it may be, i think i will to see what brand it is.
as you can see what looks like the sticker that identifies it in the middle is totally faded.
my dad talked to my cousin's husband who works at haltech programming ecu's and described it and he said it sounds pretty old because it has a serial port not a usb port but other than that i have no idea.
i will post in the ems forum and see if anyone there can identify it.
any idea on why there is no air flow meter ?
Thanks,
David.

Hi s5sleeper,
i tried fitting a standard ecu but it wont start it just cranks over.
i dont have an airflow meter on the car as it had an aftermarket pod style air filter on it when i got it so when i get my next pay i will try and source an air flow meter for it and see if it starts with that and the standard ecu.
the problems is that im on a disability pension so i cant afford to buy a new aftermarket ecu for it as they are around $1000 and im trying to get the car running as cheaply as possible.
thats why i would like to get it to run on a standard ecu for now.
Thanks,
David.

Many ECUs are still produced with serial ports, so don't use that as the basis of deciding how old it was. Until about 2 years ago, all Haltechs had serial ports as well.
Hi Aaron Cake,
thats interesting, i guess this guy is just used to working on new haltechs and to him 2 years is old
i will pull it out and see if there are any indentifying marks on the outside underneath and if not i will pull the cover off and see if there are any inside.
Thanks for the reply,
David.
