Autronic SM2 god or bad? is it hard to tune?

Hello every one.

Im soon getting my new car. (monday)
Rx7 -93 silver with 9600 US miles

And im thinking about putting the Autronic SM2 in it.

Is there any bad things that i should now about SM2?
Will it work fine with the rotary?
do the "auto tune" work well on the rotary?

Im also thinkig of bying the UEGO wideband and learning to tune it my self.
At first im going to get help but i realy want to learn it my self.

Is it hard to learn how to tune?
where should i start? any god books i should read?

May sound like dumb questions but every one have to be a newbie some time!
My english isnt so good either

I've heard the Autronics SM2 (or was that the SMC?) can't do split ignition trailing that well?

I am sure there are more, but RXeng and RICE RACING both know there way around the Autronic unit, perhaps you should PM them.

Rice Racing is only running an SMC in his yellow series 2, he would like a SMC2 though, they have even more options like full house traction control amongst other things. They are a top quality unit if you can find someone that can tune it for you, unless you feel like jumping into the diving pool and tune it yourself.

Mattias, there are good and bad points to all ecu's.

The SM2 has some awsome features and it works on a RE fine to answer all your questions, the benifit over SMC (which I have extensive experience on) is that it will run split timing and it will do true primary and secondary (staged) injection through a special macro program which the SMC can only do to a mild extent through injector trimming based on load (cannot do true stagging)

I will be glad to help you with whatever you need to know in terms of set up (as there is minimal difference between the two units) so long as you are patient, as I take a while sometimes to respond to emails latley

As in ALL ecu's it is down to the tune, if you take your time and step up on your learning as you go you will have no hassles, it will be more expensive to instal and need more mods to run on the engine compared to a Haltech or Microtech (which are good units) but you will get awsome features like traction control, superb data logging, and Auto tunning which will make your life easy if you are trying to go it alone.

Have you herd of MRM racing, I think he is in sweden, he seems like he has his head screwed on, spoke with him a few times.

regards.

HI MATTIAS.
YES THE AUTRONIC CAN BE A LITTLE HARD TO TUNE FOR SOMEONE WHO ISN'T TOTALLY UP ON AFTERMARKET ENGINE MANAGEMENT.PROBALY A LITTLE BIT SIMILAR TO PUTTING A LEARNER DRIVER IN AN F1 CAR!
THE SM2 HAS MORE FEATURES THAN MOST PEOPLE COULD POSSIBLY EVEN THINK OF USING BUT IT IS WHAT I'D CONSIDER POSSIBLY THE MOST AWESOME COMPUTERS AVAILABLE.
AS FOR BOOKS OR INSTRUCTIONS IT'S PRETTY MUCH WORK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF. I HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING YET.
I HAVE SET A COUPLE UP ON ROTARIES AND THEY WORK FINE BUT DO TAKE A SUBSTANTIALY LONGER TIME TO SET UP THAN MOST OTHERS BUT REMEMBER THEY ARE A HIGH END SYSTEM.
IF YOU GET ONE AND NEED HELP,LET ME KNOW AND I'LL GIVE YOU A HAND.

is the macro program from autronic or is some one that programmed it him self?

Yes MRM is in Sweden im thinking of bying the Sm2 of him.
http://www.mrm-racing.a.se/English/index1.htm

i think i cost about 2000USD in Sweden i think that is whitout cables and sensors
and another 1000 for the uego wideband with out cabels.

Is it much cheeper in US or any other place?

I will mail you guys as soon as i get the autronic in my car.

The macro is a Autronic thing written by Richard Aubert the designer of the ECU, he did it due to customer demand to run staged injection...it is only available for the SM2 ecu.

The ECU costs around $3000 Aus, though it is a while since I checked the cost of this unit, you should take into account warranty and after sales issues too when buying from overseas, Robert from MRM is a realy good guy and will look after you as he is that countries distributor (I believe in good support) so even for the money difference saving you should keep this in mind ?

I hope to hear from you soon once you get her installed

When you install the unit, please take out your fuel injectors and test them at the static pressure your will run them at and note each individual flow result as each injector flow rate can be trimmed in the ecu to account for differences and also I or "you" will need the resulting "actual" flow rated to set an accurate base fuel calibration number in the ECU. This is a must do !

regards.

I think im going buying the unit from MRM just to be on the safe side with support and warranty issues.

If everything goes as i hope im putting the autronic in during the winter.
Just bought the car so i have to have some fun before i rip it apart...

I will get my friend meet the flowrate on the injector, he works in a car shop and have the tools for it...

Im realy glad that im getting some help from this forum, in Sweden hardly no one knows anything about the rotary and even less about the rotary with the autronic.

Hope i can give those swedish Supra guys some real competition in the next years!!
