Streching Tires

I think this might be helpful to those running 16'' 17'' or 18'' rims and sliding. I am also currious what tires work on what width rims...

Post up your wheel dimensions and the tire size your running and how much of a stretch it is, on a 1 2 3 scale 1 being a little to none 2 being fair 3 being extreme.

Mounting: (Use proper PPE and your brain)
There are 2 main ways of seating the beads on stretched tires.

The first is using a cheetah, It is a 7 gallon tank that holds air at 120psi, it shoots the air into the tire stretching it and popping the bead onto the rim.

The second is for those who dont have $300-$500 to spend on a cheetah, cant find someone who does or needs to pop a bead on the road.
Use brake cleaner or ether based engine starting fluid, first spray around the tire but not on it you want to hit the inside of the rim not the face or tire and then you light it with a match and it explodes it onto the rim due to the combustion and no where for the exhaust to go, use a long match on a yardstick if you think you are gonna blow yourself up, also stack weights on top the rim so it doesnt fly into your face.

I am not liable for your injury's use proper protection and have a fire extinguisher or its equivalent available

Rim and Tire Size Combos:
Rim Size Tire size Stretch Factor
16x8 205/50/16 1.5

(POST YOUR COMBOS FOR TOUGE OR DRIFT HERE)

And for those of you who say stretching tires isnt safe, it all depends on the stretch and the tire used, also remember this is in the drifting forum, drivers in d1 and formula 1 stretch tires and they have been stretching in Europe/japan for a long time due to saving money, improving tire response, or meeting local tire fitments regulations.

Pretty mild. I'd say a 1.

POWER LEVEL should also be a variable included in this thread so here's mine.

Bone stock 6 port at a whopping 110ish whp!

i think you should also state what tires you are using.

for example, a federal 215 on a 9j might be a -1 but on other tires a 215 could be a 1.5

its been done like that for a while.

I'm not a fan of stretch, I most I would go is like maybe minus 10-15 difference in tire width with less than 50% tirewall.

At my job which is a 18-wheeler shop/sand yard they use starter fluid. They have the cheetah but it doesnt work as well 100% of the time. Starting fuild is a pretty interesting/scary stuff to me....

Stretched tires have been argued over 1000x times on this **** forum.

It doesnt matter. Do it if you like the way it looks, you will be fine. If you dont like a stretch, dont run one, but its not going to kill you.

I run, 215/40 on a 10 up front

235/40 on 10 in rear.

Ummm....

So you stretch your tires to lose handling and traction capabilities. And the fact that this whole trend was started by people that couldn't afford the right sized tire, and they said, well... we can make this work. And with everything, it started being done more and more often until it became a trend. It's just too bad that this trend is affecting your contact patch, which is you and your car's only attachment to the ground. Not exactly something I like to make sacrifices on.

Nice.

And both mounting methods are accepted. I worked at a Les Schwab (which sells Federals).

Is this really Race Car Tech? I think this should go under the appearance section. And there is not a single person on here that can legitimately say that a stretched tire offers any sort of performance gain over a correctly sized tire on a smaller/wider rim. I definitely vote that this thread gets moved out of the Race Car Tech section of the forum to somewhere more appropriate.

Can you legitimately say that it doesnt? Having a tire that's too big is just as ineffective as having one that is too small. It all depends on your susp setup and how it's being used/your driving style. Most people who have stretched tires arent drag racing or road racing or autox'ing, they're either cruising around or drifting. Stretching tires creates a firmer sidewall thus less slip angle, less slip angle means quicker reaction from your tires as well as a more abrupt and predictable loss of traction which alot of people prefer in drifting. Of course there's a happy medium as there is with everything, but this is all personal preference and has little to do with what other people think is the "right way".

Besides, that **** just looks better than some fat *** balloon tires on some 4x4 "race car" anyway.

235/40/18 Federal 595 on 10.5's, didnt need a cheetah or the flame method, just a really good compressor lol.

Cause I can
