Bens build: going pro-am

Shall I start at the beginning? I was born. I grew up. Then the seven came into my life. The seven has a soul but it doesn’t believe itself to be a man or woman, so it has always felt right to call it “seven”. Seven came into my life near the end of the summer 2006. It was a progressive step I had been wanting to take for some time into a rwd vehicle, and my fascination with rotaries and my room mate having a cream puff example of a Series 5 Turbo II I bought it, and have put it to hard use since the first day I had the keys. First night was drag racing, within a week I was at my first drift event when JTP told me I picked a terrible car to start drifting. I asked him why and he response was lack of steering angle and dtss.

So first mod was to remove that, and before the next event at english town it was done, I thought it changed it a lot in turns but I still sucked hard. Think about it I was a poser (I realize this now) who had just jumped from a 120hp ford probe, to a true 200hp sports car. It wasn’t the cars fault I had just made a huge leap.

So moved back to va and lets just say I didn’t have the cash or confidence to hit the track, so I started rallying my daily driver 323 gtx and taking the seven out for auto-x and mountain action. learned a lot but eventually I wrecked on my way up to summit into a boulder destroying the bumper, fender, wheel, lca, subframe, and tie rod. So I rebuilt it on a budget with a shitty cf hood, super now inner tie rods, urethane control bushings, and other used parts.

again I moved to NC to support my girl friend (currently wife) through radiology school. So the seven was neglected mostly, I did gather up a used set of 17’s and racing beat rev II exhaust. Eventually I found Streetwise drift and started drifting with those guys. they brought my confidence up enough to start doing the track drifting when I moved back to va.

Well first thing I did at summit was smash my car into a wall at roughly 60. I entered big bend, which is third gear sweeper, and lost it due to inexperience and the rain I suppose. So destroyed the left side when I went backwards and caught the tire wall. The front left hit first trying to finish the 360 rotation and once that grabbed it pulled the rest of my left side in. With a few minutes, a few cigarettes, and a quick ambulance rest I was rolling the damaged fenders away from my brand new 5Zigens and getting the glass out of my seat and I was back on track. Despite a bent tie rod and torn plug wire insulations I continued to battle in the rain and took first overall. Trailer’d my wreck home feeling proud of the carnage.

Within the week I began to rebuild the seven. It took about a month of late nights, countless beers, and good friends sacrificing their time to rebuild the seven, better, more colorful, and of course wider. Eventually I went and picked out a spur of the moment color that I honestly stole from JB guillo on his vert but I figure he can forgive me. So again another two weeks of paint/prep and wetsanding to make it look decent, and the seven was back on track within 48 hours of paint completion.

Sorry I don’t feel the body is finished enough to take any photos myself. Still needs better fitment, moar low, and some swirl marks touched up.

While I was out with my paint guy getting dinner with his family, his step son/my best friend texted me saying, ranzo was looking to get rid of his half bridge setup. So a month later I am driving down to memphis to score this engine, trans, harness, and Power fc for what I consider a song. So currently the motor has been pulled and swapped into my vert as a daily, and the coupe is currently at my Fabricators shop where I have stripped the engine bay, stitched weld, painted, and reassembled some of the bay. The motor is currently bolted in place. Pictures soon

The motor Internally has, RA apex seals, Atkins solid Corners, Mazda side seals and all Mazda springs. 9.4 NA rotors. 60-1 turbo china turbo which is being replaced by a garret bb chra and the housing will be swapped over, 48mm wastegate bolted on a greddy t4 manifold. Mazdaspeed mounts hold this puppy down. Once its running I am looking to have the tuning refined and aiming for 400. Stay tuned for more progress very soon, and please any helpful criticism as this is my first build so I am learning as it goes on.

forgot to mention up there the motor is a half bridge, with 1680 secondaries and 550 primary

i would sell you the lip if i had it, it lost its life in the first wreck. i loved that lip

alittle stitch welding and engine bay painting and whatnot. had a bitch of a time setting up the welder so it didnt burn or monkey booger. but penetration is not a problem thats for sure.(thats what she said)

bling bloaw

and of course the new muffler from racing beat

side note alittle jon combs video of myself, i like it
ordered my abs delete and my new garrett ball bearing t4 60-1. Decided i liked the idea of a 4" inlet and new housings instead of swapping my old ones over. So either i rebuild the journal bearing 60-1 and sell it....or i sell it.

not sure what happenig next, i believe thursday i will be installing the coils and ps stuff back in the bay, rewiring a few odds and ends and walboro install. Next good chunk of time i get with my fabricator i will start on the vmount setup so stay tuned for that fun stuff.

ditch that muffler for grips, and get a trumpet exhaust.

youre losing so much power by running that ****....when i went straightpipe and gutted my cannister out my **** started spinning through 3rd straightlining....

i am considering making a "test pipe" if you will. however i expect this motor to make close to 400whp so i dont think spinning through third will be a problem but i will try it both ways for sure.

small update, got my turbo on and the exhaust mostly fab'd. will need to have a exhaust shop bend the piping from the muffler i have located in the center of the car to the rear. the new turbo is a good bit larger thatn the old one for sure. no other real updates besides my radiator should be in tomorrow so maybe this weekend the car will be running. then i am in need of a good tuner

^ dont get it

Its a garrett T4 frame 60-1 ball bearing unit. .70 ar compressor housing 4" inlet .96 ar turbine housing p trim turbine wheel. it kinda make my other 60-1 look silly. almost alittle worried about spool time

^^ He was probably just talking about the original damage. that was cleaned up with the over fenders. The rear fenders look good.

Is the motor a stock port? Well the Garrett T4 60-1, I'm guessing a T04S, is a good turbo and should spool fast. It will spool slower than a gt35r, but it will also make more power at 15psi than the gt35r. So you lose a little spool time in exchange for more power.

The plus side to a T04s is that they're tested and reliable. If you have porting done on the motor it will spool very quickly.

where did you get that turbo? i need that exact one for my 20b build.

also your spool time is probably going to suck

edit: oh and is it oil and watercooled?

yes oil and water cooled all BB are for my knowledge. I got this particular one from ATPturbo.com but if you go to aptuning (i think) then its like 200 bucks cheaper on sale right now. but you dont get as many turbine housing options. so look at them both. i guess we will find out this weekend (fingers crossed) how it goes, just depends on the old tune for the old turbo and any gremlins in my path.
