Given the grass roots nature of this event and the fact that most attendees are driving, not flying, the organizers can wait a little longer to make a decision.
Sadly, it's already turned into a Pandemic (at least according to The WHO). Not to get off topic, but this write up, which is backed up by numbers, makes me think 6 weeks isn't going to be enough :-(

If people haven't seen it, you should find Phil's Facebook post and throw your $0.02 in.

I think everything is going to be fine now. Stop the panic folks. The liberal media is hyping this up to be way more than it actually is. Just use common sense... No door **** licking!!! lol

Ha. While I'm not worried about dying, I'd say The WHO and now the President, who is as far from left as can be, declaring a pandemic and national emergency is probably a sign that things are going to get worse before they get better. I don't think (m)any of us are in the target risk group, but there is genuine concern about the impact this is going to make on our healthcare system as thousands of sick (but not dying) people show up looking for treatment. My sister works at a hospital in MA and she said they are down to 12 days of surgical sanitizing supplies and have canceled all but critical surgeries. So yeh..I was thinking more along the line of possibly not spreading this around even if none of us are at risk of death. People without Corona are still going get sick, get in car accidents, get cancer, etc. so what happens when they go to hospital and they are overrun with corona patients or out of sanitizing products or have low staff because healthcare workers have been exposed. That's the crap that worries me about this debacle...that and the stupidity of people hoarding toilet paper...

but yeh...my car is so ready to ride so I'm hoping we keep it going...I just hope organizers keep the possible impact in mind and make a smart call.

Its basically CYA for the President. He cant win here with the Libs and the Media. He is screwed either way he goes. The organizers will hopefully continue to do the right thing by keeping the show on. Nobody is being forced to go. I will be going either way. I will take my chances, life is short and we all have to die someday anyway!! lol

I guess the big question now is.... Do we want to stay at Microtel? We could all go back to the lodge or wherever? Thoughts?

I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet....

If I lived closer, and if I was booked at the NV or at nice cabin instead of the Microtel, this would be a no-brainer -- I'd just go as planned, bring my GF along & enjoy a few days off in the mountains with her and whoever else from the usual DGRR crew that shows up. But since I'm a 650 mile/10 hour one-way road trip away, I'm having second thoughts. For me, it's about socializing with all the rotorheads & seeing all the rotary cars that motivates me to make the long road trip - I've driven the tail enough times now that it's not the primary reason I go anymore. Not sure I'd make the long trip just to stay at a Microtel and hang out with just a small portion of the usual DGRR peeps and run the tail a few times.

The Village has both rooms and cabins available Pete. From what i can tell, there will be plenty of folks show up. It might be fun.

It’s still early, but those traveling long distances should really consider staying home. Every rest area, restaurant, and gas station is a chance to pick up and/or spread the virus. If the media and govt and WHO is still strongly pushing “social distancing” in 5 weeks time, it’s a no brainer for us, we’re staying home and i’ll catch up with everyone the next time.

For anyone interested in changing your booking from the Microtel back to the Lodge, the Lodge is giving special rates to get our business back. I think i am going to book the lodge just because i like it and the trailer parking is nice... Just tell them your with DGRR or the "mazda group" as she called it!! lol

Phil cancelled the event, you should check the FB group or email him. There are some options for refunds.

Sadly not surprised as the latest CDC guidance is 8 weeks of avoiding gathering of 50 or more. The governor of NC also mandated cancelling events of 100 people or more.

Looking at their accomodations/reservations online, what is "fireside" you're referring to? We're giving serious consideration to cancelling at MIcrotel, as it doesn't seem to have much to offer at this point. Plus, If I was going to stay in town, I'd rather be at a hotel within stumbling distance of Nantahala Brewing and the other bars, not on the other side of the highway. We might just look into cabins outside town if the price is right. Did the person say on the phone if they were willing to give special rates to cabins too, or just lodge rooms?

Counties in NC are starting to shut down to visitors. Who knows what it will be like in a month, but there is the possibility you drive all the way down/here only to be turned away at a checkpoint. Restaurants and bars in NC have been ordered closed and only open for take out/pick up as of today.
