I was going to post a thank you for how well it was working, but the forum was down

Just kidding!! I'm sure everyone appreciates what a nice asset this forum is. I don't think the mods get enough thank-yous for their efforts.

Thanks to everyone!!!

You should change the errors on the forum to reflect something a little more personal.

Lately, since the DB errors have gone away, I've been getting a lot of "Page can not be found" and "Proxy Error" and IMs from people getting the same **** asking me if the forum's down.

Also, nice duck on banzai's reply. you should go in to politics. You'd make a good democrat.

Where are the replies?

Where are the answers to questions when we ask what the issues are?

Yeah, I'll be the devil's advocate since any time I try to contact you...nothing, but when I'm quick to answer you, I don't get a thank you. It's a two way street.

And the forum has been tragically slow since your DB fix. What exactly was the issue? What are the current DB specs since I'm going to guess that the delay is somewhat DB related. I say this as I can hit the webservers no problem. Pretty quick response, but when pulling ANY content...might as well mow the lawn while I'm waiting.

Are you using 100Mb or gig between the web servers and DB? What is your bandwidth to us anyway? And since you brought it up, what are the monthly costs anyway for the site? I assume it's all home built and self managed HW and SW? You're only paying for the pipe and co-lo space? Perhaps the FW is managed?

I'm just curious. If this sounds like a knock, so be it.

It's free because he pulls in revenue from all the advertising. That's besides the point however. Since being back after the "fixes", the board has been horribly slower than it was before, not to mention I still get that error message, not to mention a few others have popped up as well. If Ryan spent money to get something fixed, he got ripped off.

Don't think Ryan is making alot of money off this forum. He's gone broke trying to keep this forum alive.

I don't read every thread, I don't read about 99% of the threads on here ... how could I? So why would somebody assume I didn't answer their question just because I didn't reply to a thread, when chances are I never even saw it?

As far as discussing the specifics of hardware and software, I have no desire to honestly. I've posted that stuff before in a forum wide announcement after the last upgrade. And I have an Admin (Bob - inittab) who's judgmement I trust implicitly. I'm not going to use the forum looking for suggestions from people who can't possibly have any clue about what's going on behind the scenes. Our challenges change constantly, it's not about hardware ... or bandwidth ... or software configuration. It's a complex interraction of all those things. I'm not letting anybody else log into the boxes to check things out, and without doing that there's no way your suggestions could be applicable.

Everybody assumes they know what's going on, like you just did. But I have yet to see anybody make an assumption about how the forum is ran that's actually correct. You expect me to take the time to correct every wrong assumption?

BTW, the site has been slow all day today because I've been working since 8am on cleaning some stuff up. I'll wait until tonight to do the most sever intensive stuff, so expect it to be really slow from about midnight to 6am.

TODAY? No. Try several weeks.

That's fine if you want to dismiss my questions. I'll search and try to find what I'm looking for. Or, instead of wasting the energy, you could just answer those questions here. But I know better not to expect that much.

And as far as having a clue...I work in a substantially larger environment that this site could ever dream of living in. No, I'm not a server guy. No, I'm not a DB guy. I am, however, a network guy. God forbid someone may actually TRY to help. Shrug it off. It IS free after all, right? Damn me for coming off as holier than thou, but come on. How hard is it to answer? You have how many users on this forum? You think someone MIGHT do this as well? Someone who's willing to help?

BTW, the times I had tried to contact you, I had IM'd you on AIM several times and started a thread with YOUR name in the title EXPLICITLY asking for you to contact me. It's a moot point now. Only when I bitch do I seem to get your attention. Not the first time either.

Look, I'm an admin at our local forums. Of course, we're not nearly the size of this nor do we have our own dedicated servers since we aren't in need of them yet. We have our occasional glitch, but it's not that hard to let the folks know what's going on, why it's happening, what fixed it, etc. 5 min it all it takes. Everybody assumes cause no one tells us anything. DUH!

But...I digress...perhaps if I knew it was worth to donate, I would. But with this attitude...

I know exactly when the site is slow and when it's not, we have extensive logs for all that stuff.

I never said you don't have a clue in general - but you don't have a clue about this site and the challenges associated with it, nor do you have a clue about our configurations or the knowledge of those supporting it. I worked at a huge company for over 7 years as an Unix Admin working with hundreds of Solaris and HP boxes. I know a lot, but Bob - the real Admin - knows more than anybody I've ever met. I'd be surprised if anybody on this forum truly is more capable than Bob at doing what he does.

I'm not giving anybody a login to the boxes, and without seeing the specifics of our config you can't offer any suggestions. Unless you've worked with other massive vb forums you just can't. And I know that if Bob can't fix it, nobody can.

You do come of totally as holier than thou, and you wonder why I may have ignored you in the past? I've noticed that attitude from you many times in the past. There are always a few people who just love to put themselves above the guy in charge. I have no time for judgemental people.

I have huh? Well, then link me to those threads. For someone who says they don't read 99% of threads, that's quite a claim. Otherwise stay in your pretentious corner.

And I wasn't asking for a login. Talk about assuming. You said I don't have a clue? Well, I guess you're right.

As far as being holier than thou? Well, I guess we have a mutual disrespect for each other then. Guess that's something...

Get a grip man. I don't have any disrespect for you, I don't even know you. If you want to twist my words into a reason for getting all out of shape, go right ahead. You and the few others who love to hate me - but don't know me at all - will have something to talk about.

It's gripped tight. I'm not trying to pick a fight by any means. But if you try to call me out, please back it up. Not so much to ask...

Don't think that I don't appreciate this site. I do. I've received a LOT of help and information from here. But the "you don't know" thing has gotta go. And I'm not the only one. We all obviously enjoy the site. We're all still here so...just like you did in the announcement...you explained it. That's all I was looking for.

So thank you for putting up with us. Thank you for the site. I'll try to come down to your level in the future, but only if you answer your damned IMs

...YES! THAT WAS A JOKE...

And for the record, I DID mention DB issues. So I wasn't off base.

Geez, some people as such f'n jerks it's amazing ... like you'd ever be such a dick to somebody's face.

Like I've said 1000 times today, the site is slow because I've been working since 8am on cleanup. It's been slow for the last 15 minutes because I was running a table repair.
