Do you have to be approved to access it?, if so why?

Yes.

Multiple reasons.

It's like a secret society of alpha-egos going head to head on a daily basis. Think bare-knuckle boxers killing each other with brains for fists and fists for brains.

I was wondering what the reasons are?
And a suggestion why not make it available to everybody and limit posting to certain people.

It's rather simple. The people who post in there usually are behaved individuals who are PRECISE and CLEAR in their arguement. They don't just go around calling people idiots and not giving a reason why.

You have to be selected to have access. It's also very very lightly moderated in there, so if you get bitch slapped by somebody don't expect a moderator to take your side.

As a reminder here are some things to consider regarding the DoO.

1.) If you do not have at least 500 posts, you probably won't get in.

2.) An admin or moderator will review your past posts, and confirm that you are able to post clear and concise postings and replies without attacking or devolving into lounge type posts before any access is granted.

3.) An admin or moderator may also contact you through PM's about your application to enter the DoO and ask you further questions.

The why has pretty much been discussed to death in various threads around the forum and here.

FWIW - The DoO was open to the public for several years, that didn't work well at all.

I did not know that. However I did not post much in my first year to 1.5 years on the forum. And most of my post count is from NorthEast section and classifieds.

If you are interested in DoO, send me a PM and I will review your previous posts from the past.

Ok I understand that you dont want people posting immature comments, but why cant everyone view it and make posting restricted to certain people?

The DoO is not a section of the forum that we choose to emphasize and there is no particular interest in growing the DoO section.

By opening it up for viewing (by all members) yet restricting it for posting by a few, it will only serve to create "spinoff" threads, discussing the DoO threads in other sections (such as the lounge). Obviously, this is counterproductive and pretty much negates the idea of the section being hidden and illusive.

If it weren't such an outlet for a specific group of users it would have been eliminated a few years ago I am certain.
