Because it makes them feel older. Much like what does a 30 year old guys see in a hot 25 year old lady (trophy). Girls want their trophies too. Such a shame, and you wander why cops are aggressive with the younger kids. Too much car and too little experience behind the wheel. While I agree we shouldn't penalize younger driver with high insurance, they should get a good break on something like an old K-car or a tercel with an automatic while keeping the cost of driving a supra out of reach.

Agreed! Especially something like this. I say give'm a break and penalize heavily for each infraction to encourage safe driving. But nonetheless, make the faster and more risky vehicles a little more cost prohibitive. Had this guy been driving a tercel he wouldn't have been able to pass anything.

I gotta chuckle at how surprised some of you are at a 4 or 5 year age difference....holy cow....my wife's 4 years younger than me, so I guess I'm a cradle robber. When I was 20 I used to hang out with 16 year olds and 25 year olds....kept things interesting.
Tragic end to such a young life. I lost a good friend 10 years ago to gang violence in Detroit. She was only 16 and was an innocent passenger in a friend's car....took a bullet in the back that went through the deck lid, back seat and into her. I still think about what her life might have been like now.

I'm with 84stock, the dipshit driver may still have been drinking and driving if he'd been in a Tercel, but it's a lot less likely he'd be trying to blow by a rig with a high differential in speed, snap the car into oversteer, and end up with the car jammed under the rear wheels of the trailer, which sounds like what happened from the article. The combination of relatively high power, rear wheel drive, and a large shot of stupidity got this girl killed - and the weasel driver tried to take off to boot.
Of course, even with high rates for young drivers on sports cars, with easy money here in Calgary, or parents who'll buy their kids Mustang GT's and the like and pay their insurance its impossible to keep inexperienced drivers out of cars that are beyond their ability/maturity.

i've noticed that on this side of the city, especially on 16th ave, most driver care little for speen limits. on stoney trail, speed limit is 80, but the average is usually 100-100km/h, there are very few officers out this far.
as for the driver, just b/c he fled and left the girl to die in his passenger seat, he should have his left foot amputated so that he'll never be able to drive anything except an auto ever again. or lock him in a small room with a cracked out starving wolf.

I never ran off and left someone to die.
i truely believe in ownership and responsibility. if i flip my car on an open highway, the only one getting hurt is myself due to my own stupidity (not that i'd even do that now-a-days) but if my action could effect others you can be dam sure imma take it easy, hence y i'm prolly one of the more passive drivers in calgary limits.
