RB Header

Remember a while back how there was big discusion about that old RB header on a Gen one Rx-7 up at Cambridge auto wreckers.... Well I finaly got the chance to go up there ( I needed a new strut rod). While I was there I decided I would take teh header off.

Well I now have the header. The best part is it only took like 10minutes to take off.lol

On the conside, it is rusty, and some dork messed around with the header, and did some shity welds, which have cracked. Overall I say it is a good find for 20$. Nothing a little muffler seal, sandpaper, and some paint or somehting can't fix.

now I also have a question for those of you who decided to read, my speach: What kind of paint should I use on the header?

Instead of painting and using muffler seal, have it tig welded and sent out to be ceramic coated. It'll last forever instead of just having the paint burn off and the muffler seal melt. Rotary exhaust gasses are freakin hot!

lol. meh, I was happy with the deal. As for the ceramic coating, that is big bucks, and the so called "muffler cememnt" says it is good to 2000C or something like that. It is basicly a liquid metal that cures with heat.

I would go and get it welded, TIG is nice, but not really required, MIG will do fine. A muffler shop would likely do it for another 20bucks or so.

I'm thinkin if the exhaust will melt the insides of a Catalytic, just think how long the muffler Cement will last...No-Name..if you Don't want to take it off TWICE ..spend 10 more bucks and get someone to weld the Sucker..otherwise use the Cement..and Pray..AS far as Painting it,What about header wrap?..it will keep the heat Down.Maybe Jimmy54 may see this.I bought a Header off him,and he gave it a quick paint "touch-up",and It is holding up quite Nicely.

I heard ceramic coating can actually accelerate the rusting of the metal (gives moisture nowhere to evaporate to). I've no first-hand data to back that up, but it seems to be a common comment.

That's interesting Manntis, thanks for sharing that. I've never personally heard of that though. All the rednecks around here swear by the stuff.

That is intresting. Maybe I will get it welded, but it is just some small cracks at the half *** welds... Tell me more about this header wrap stuff, it intrigues me?

Thats the header wrap that does that. WOuld work ok for someone like Neo that doesn't drive the car in the rain, but for people that drive the car daily not such a great idea.

I wonder if wrapping them would give the same negative result. Perhaps using a heat shield is the best way to go?

i think heat wrapps are better then ceramic coatings b/c i have just some crappy mopac graphic wrap covering my exhaust from turbo to y-pipe and i can actually drive my car home. get out and grab the exhaust pipe without burning myself. i doubt that coating less then 1/1000 of an inch can do the same. i haven't seen any rust yet but i do notice that road debris is wearign away at the wraps, especially on the very bottem like under the pre-scilencer.
