Need Help! Starting Issue!

Hello everyone,

This is what has transpired.

I had my 1993 Rx7 in storage for 2 years.

So, I put a new battery in it, and I start it up. Runs fine.

I take it to the Emissions place, and I get a call saying it passed. When I am leaving my mechanic states "he adjusted my idle" so it would pass.

I think very little of it, I drive the car home. Soon after I start having this issue:

I have no problem starting the car the first time. I drive the car for a while, then I park, go and eat or something, or whatever reason, I then try and start the car, the the car has a hard time starting. It cranks, cranks, cranks, but it will nearly start, then die down, once I get it to start it starts, it idles fine etc once I get it going.

I know the recommendation is get a compression test, which I am trying to find a place to do it for a reasonable price, 250$ for a test is a bit pricey. If anyone has a place that can do it, and knows what they are doing, please tell me.

Also, any idea what this could be caused by? The plugs were put in 2 years ago, and had very little use. So I have eliminated that (they are being checked anyways), anything at all? Anyone have this issue? The car does not seem to be burning coolant or oil, there is no white fumes smoking out of the exhaust upon start.

Recommendations? Suggestions on place to use to fix?

Thanks
real1st

Fuel injectors? If it's leaving bits of fuel in the chamber after you shut the car off, that could cause flooding.

It's probably not any of the cooling system, but check your oil pressure.

If all else have been checked, then it's most likely the TPS needs adjusting.

Get your compression checked, Marco said he would do it for free in the other thread you started.

I would ask your mechanic what he adjusted when he did the etest. Chances are he adjusted something he shouldn't have. I don't know about the FD throttle bodies, but the earlier FC ones are very touchy. If it's not adjusted properly it can cause all kinds of problems. I would start there personally.

Alright. TheWired did my compression. Test! 95+ on both. Compression is not the issue.

Spark plugs are brand new. They are not the problem.

I'm going to do the champagne test, to see if coolant leak is causing hot start issue. Although I do not have white smoke coming out of my exhaust.

Any other thoughts?

Have you asked the mechanic what he adjusted yet? It has been a while but isn't there a solenoid for hot starting? It is suppose to pull vacuum in a hot start situation I thought. Are all the hoses connected around the throttle body, or uim?

I noticed there was a slight sweet smell when the car would start and then it would go away almost immediately. real1st, also mentioned that his car was leaking a tiny bit of coolant on the floor at some point and the reservoir was empty when he said it was full last time he checked. He did a bubble test today and hes getting the bubbles in the coolant . Seems like its just starting to have coolant seal failure.

could the bubbles also be caused by a leak in the system?.
I've heard of system getting air from a bad clamp for example.
I'd try fixing the leaks,if that is what he has going on,then retest the system. It would save the agony of a teardown.

Also, is the sweet smell from the exhaust or engine bay? I'm sure you probably thought of this...but just double checking...lol. Location says a lot too
