Lol you're just as bad as I am. I have seen that ad on kijiji, but something there seems fishy to me. That and I don't want a regular cab. I'm really starting to like the Hilux Surfs and am seriously considering doing the trip out west. I want to contact my own insurance broker soon to see if she can get me insurance. She got me classic car insurance when I was 23 so I hope she can work this out for me too.

Lol yes and he got one! I've been jealous of Mcfly for years!!! I watched those movies for 2 reasons. The Delorean and that Toyota truck. The nissan trucks are also on the list of possible trucks to import, but I've been set on a toyota for a long time. Just something out the looks of them that has always got me.

So in going with my style I went in a completely different direction. I bought a 1989 Toyota pickup extended cab 4x4 5 speed. It was a 3.0L v6 but the previous owner started swapping a newer 3.4L v6 into it. He got the mechanical work done, but got lost with the wiring and gave up. The body needs work, but is solid compared to any other truck like it around here. I got it for pretty much scrap price so let the build begin! Thanks for all the help guys!

Oh ya there are tons of other interesting choices out there and trust me I've looked into them. The Hilux just seemed to fit my needs the most. I'll post up some pics when I pick it up in 2 weekends. Don't get too excited though. It's not much to look at right now lol.

Lol ya that was pure coincidence. I just happened to park there at that truck stop to go get a drink and thought that was a good opportunity to snap some picks. Pretty happy with this truck so far. I didn't even realize it when I bought it, but it has bucket seats, center console, rear window defrost, and a sunroof. Must have been pretty much top of the line back in '89.

^That could happen down the road although last night I heard a rumor that Toyota is bringing out a Tundra in 2016 with the 4 cylinder Cummins turbo diesel in it. If that happens I may just buy one of those.
Edit just read up on it. Sounds like it will be a Cummins built 5.0L V8 turbo diesel. Even more interesting....

Nice truck you got there. Personally, I would stay away from the new diesels. Expensive things to fix when they do break down and you don't wanna start messing with the emission controls on em. An old Toyota like yours with a slightly pumped up Cummins 4BT will be reliable and do just about anything you want likely and get good fuel mileage to top it off.

I thought about a 4BT swap, but I think the engine would still be too big and heavy for the chassis without major modifications. As luck would have it, the week after I bought this truck I found a 1996 Hilux Surf for sale on kijiji. It had the newer 1KZTE 3.0L diesel 5 speed for $7,500. It never fails as soon as you buy something a better deal comes along. Oh well I'll stick with my LHD truck.

Oh for sure, you were on the right path. A 4bt toyota truck was my very first idea, but after some thought and research I decided it wasn't very doable. With tons of modification I'm sure it could be done, but not worth it for a year round vehicle that will eventually rot to death.
