I pay regular insurance on my daily driver...Honda
And got Hagerty Classic Car Insurance on my FC...fair weather machine. $100/yr. Yes, for the whole year.

Hagerty is good but they have restrictions. Big one being no one under the age of 25 can drive the car. If your old enough and don't have any kids or anything that might drive the car then your're good.

My broker has quoted some of my cars as "classics". Not quite sure exactly what that is but its similar to Hagerty from what I can tell. Basically, car must be 15 years old and you cant use it to commute. $108/yr was the quote I got.

The reason I am hesitant to go the "classic" route is the car needs an appraisal. Which will likely disclose the modified nature of the car...

I have both my cars insured on a classic policy through Intact. I got the insurance before I was 25 and had no issues. I am limited to 5000 kms per year on each car and it can't be your daily driver. Both cars were appraised to value before hand and both are fairly modified. I had no issues at all and the policy is less than $300 a year for both cars. My broker was going to get hagerty to insure me but they declined me due to my age at the time.

Haggerty asks that you also have a daily that is less than 10 years old.
I told them I had a 87 also that was a daily and they didn't even want to talk to me about the 86 that I was trying to insure with them.

I tried getting insurance and telling the companies I spoke to up front about the extra "parts" on it.They would not even consider the car.
So I finally just said "screw it" and didn't say anything unless they asked.
I got my insurance.NOW if the car is involved I am certain that it won't cover any Bling on it but at least I get to drive the damn thing, which is really all I wanted to do.

I just checked with my broker and Intact is the company he quoted me with.

Did the appraiser not mention the mods or did the insurance company not care? I'm paranoid about disclosing my engine swap though an appraisal and then being denied any insurance on the car.

Well at that time my TII was relatively stock, but my Rx-4 wasn't even close. He didn't seem to care at all and photos of the whole entire car were included in the appraisal package. If they couldn't see it was modified they are blind!

I cant help but thinking they maybe just didn't know what an RX-4 was supposed to look like so assumed everything in the appraisal was normal. Even searching RX-4 on Google returns mostly modified cars so if they are comparing to that...

My car never came with a rotary engine and to see a picture of the engine bay, even someone knowing nothing about cars, it would appear a little off.

Looks like my Miata would be about ~$150/yr insured under classic insurance. With my truck coverage total bill comes to about $135/mo.

As it turns out, both vehicles under regular insurance comes to $155/mo. I've paid significantly more for a single car in the past.

$20/mo is probably worth not having to deal with appraisal and possible denial of coverage.

My only concern would be that if you did put in a claim, then the insurance investigators may have a good case to deny your claim in that the vehicle was misrepresented. My insurance has taken to putting a warning on all of my vehicle insurance renewals indicating that if all of the information was not correct for each vehicle then I would not have any insurance coverage at all.

When the insurance company is given a full appraisal with multiple pictures of the vehicle, they should damn well cover you. They can clearly see what is going on in the photos and with the description the appraiser gives them. It is their choice to take you on or not.

Just the other day I got a quote from Lant (Hagerty Classic Car Insurance) for my RHD FD, I'm just trying to lower some expenses. It's more money than I'm paying now. $657/year for their modified plan, I told them I'm semi-retired and drive the car less than 5,000 km's a year e.g. a garage queen.
Also tried Vintage Auto Insurance in Lindsay just a "we don't insure RHD vehicles at this time", I'll shop around a little more and call my current insurance to see if I can get a few discounts for not driving any of my cars to work now.

I agree, my concern is that the insurance company works damn hard to deny the claims, and now at least my company has got the written info to back up their denial. If I don't fully disclose any and all facts about the car, they will have the option to deny the claim and return my premiums paid.

Totally agree with you there. All insurance companies will find a way to screw you out of money if they can. The whole system is bs if you ask me, but you need insurance to drive. I don't really know what the best solution for us is. I just know I've got insurance and I can drive. Just hope you never have to make a claim.

The insurance company will tell you the best solution is facility. It's high risk insurance and costs a metric ****-tonne of money per month. This is how people legally insure cars that are required to be heavily modified as well as street legal like rally cars. Of course lots of rally drivers just lie to the insurance company too.

Ontario is such a shitty place to be into cars. If the insurance situation does depress you to the point of getting out of the hobby the yearly salt bath will.

People I know with cars modified enough for insurance to drop them just insure the car regularly and if they are involved in a accident the car gets towed home and immediately stripped of all aftermarket parts.

In years prior my cars have been stock enough for me not to be concerned. Insurance has always the most hated point of my existence but this year its going to be even more stressful trying to insure a modified car.
