ECU Pooched?? Causing failed e-test??

Hey all, '88 N/A, checking out my AWS!!! According to Haynes, if I unplug the air by-pass solinoid, and jumper the female connector with a 2kohm resister(assuming that's to simulate the solinoid still being hooked up), when I check with a voltmeter there should be no voltage for the first 17 secs that the car is started and 12-14volts after the 17sec!! Well I have 14 volts all the time!!!! I turn the car on and there's voltage there instantly!!! Now I looked at the wiring diagrams and it looks like the power signal comes from the main relay, through the coil side of the air by-pass relay and up to the ecu! It then come back from the ecu through the air by-pass solinoid, then on back to the air by-pass relay where, once the contact is pulled in, is grounded completeing the circuit!! The relay doesn't pull in either!!! there's voltage going to it from the main relay, as well as back to it from the ecu but it still doesn't pull in!!!!! Could my ecu be pooched???

The reason I was looking into this is because I'm trying to get the car to pass an emmisions test!! I had put a new cat on and adjusted the A/F ratio as best as I could to get the car to idle around 750-800rpm and got it e-tested

Results were

Road test Curb Idle test

HC 562 with limit of 66 HC 1243 with limit of 200
CO 3.22 with limit of 0.37 CO 2.60 with limit of 1.00
NO 42 with limit of 757 NO N/A

After this I checked my TPS and found that it was shot so I bought a new one!!! I readjusted the A?F ratio a bit to help it run smooth again!!
New results omitting what passed

Road test Curb Idle test

HC 78 Limit of 66 HC 956 limit 200
Co passed Co 4.73 limit of 1.0

I'm really not sure what else to check, I check my air pump and ACV they seem to be working ok, I've got relatively new spark plugs, oil change and new air filter!!! Am I missing something???

Sorry for the long post!!! Thanks for reading and await any help/suggestions with anxious anticipation!!!!

I just went through getting an 88 e tested. Mine was completely stock. After replacing the catalytic converters I replaced the O2 sensor and it made an incredible difference went from being worse then yours to a pass.

I don't know if you can recalibrate or O2 sensor with your system or if you may want to try a new one.

Well I've got a new O2 sensor, just didn't put it on 'cause there weren't any codes for it!!!I figured the old one was still good, but I'll try that!!!

Oh and I don't know how much it matters but one of the previous owners had an S5 block put into it!!! evry thing else "appears" to be S4 though!!!

Thanks for the quick reply!!

Do you have an Air Pump on it?

You wont pass without it - so if it isn't on there, you need one! Just feed the outlet from the Air Pump directly into the split air pipe.

I had a thread in the Second Gen section about my e-Test trials!

I've still got the air pump on there!!! As well as all other emissions stuff, aside from the EGR valve, do tto the fact that there's an S5 block in the car!!! Anyone have any ideas as to the air by-pass solinoid thing?? stated above??? signal at all times???? Please I'd like to know if my ecu's fried!! Is there a way I can test it??? If it's fried then fine $350 will get me a brand new one from mazda!!! Just don't wanna replace it if I don't have to!!

S4s were never known to spit out codes even during the worst of times. Try the O2 sensor, or if you don't want to throw the new one one just yet, I got piles of used ones and could give you one to try, but most cars benefit tremendously from an O2 sensor when it comes to passing a previously failed e-test.

these ECU's rarely fail.

non-fucntioning AWS shouldn't cause any E-test issues, as the car (especially the CAT) should be as HOT as possible during the test.

it looks (to me!) like the car is too rich at idle.

I'm gonna put the new o2 sensor on this weekend!!! See if that helps!!! And Terrh It is running rich at idle!! At one point all I could smell out the exhaust was raw fuel(No longer smells like fuel though)!! That's one of the reasons i was looking at the AWS, thought that if there was a problem with it, then it would be telling the ecu to supply more fuel!!! I'm not to sure though!!! Just tryin' to check all possiblities!!!

Thanks all
