Deloreans coming back into (limited) production?

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-f...la-home-center

read this on the LA times website... the article is short on information though but I'm sure someone here knows more. When I saw this I figured I should post it up.

Considering that there is a huge stock of most NOS parts (a few exceptions, but nearly every part is available) it's not much of a stretch that "new" cars could be assembled. However the cost would be astronomical compared to a good condition original used car. Might appear those crazies willing to pay $60K plus for a restored car but I doubt it will impact the market any.

I'd pay $60,000 for a refurbished one. Closest to new you can get. They also call me crazy, among other things.

I'd rather pay $8K and do the work myself. Which of course, is what I'm doing...

if they made new ones they should make the frame stuff out of stainless too... now THAT would be awesome.

It would be cool to see the Delorean again. I've only seen a few around town.

Aaron,
When are you picking up your Delorean?

1.21 Gigawatts!!

I've cruised in the Woodward Dream Cruise for the past three years and there is always a whole club of DeLoreans up there each year. They takeover the McDonald's parking lot and of course... there are one or two that are Back to the Future replicas. They are beautiful.

I'm hoping next summer. By then, Tina should be nearly finished and I will have time to spend on the DeLorean...

My plan grows more complicated every year based on the areas on the car I would like to improve. The major problems with the DeLorean is that it's slow, has a horrid electrical system and a very flexible and rust prone frame.

Slowness is easy to solve with a 20B and a big turbo (standard stuff really). The electrical system will be replaced with something more modern and not made by Lucas (the prince of darkness). As for the frame, my plans right now are to build a tube frame from scratch to mimic the stock suspension pickup points. The original frame is a very simple double Y so I don't think it's going to be that big of a deal really. That way I can install any engine or transmission mounts I feel like.

Did someone say 4-Rotor and a Porsche 6-Speed?

I'm planning to use a Porsche transmission (I forget which one...have it at home in my notes) but certainly not a 4 rotor. There just isn't the physical space. Even the 20B will be sitting VERY close to the rear bulkhead.

4 rotor goes in the FC.

Point taken on the 4-Rotor.

As for the Porsche transmission; I belive its a 6-Speed out of a 993 (95 ~ 98) that most people use when using Porsche transmissions. Their simplicity is key.

When I build my sand rail/dune buggy, Im going to look into one of those. It already comes with a Type I transaxle, but depending on what the future holds, I'll need a better one.

Those are some big plans Aaron!

I didn't know their frame was so bad. I knew they were a bitch to maintain, but they were flexible too?
They're monocoque, right? Or is it body-on-frame?

A 20b Delorean would be very nice. I've seen a lot of rwd-rear engine kit-car guys use the Porsche G50 transmission (2wd 1987-98 911).

Anyways, just be carefull at 88 mph

Yeah, something like that. There's no bellhousing adapter available but that's some simple machine work (my machinist laughed when I asked if it would be hard/expensive). What's really interesting is that the DeLorean CV joints bolt right up, and the transmission practically bolts into the chassis.

The frame is very thing gauge steel, in a double Y configuration like the Esprit of the time. It's prone to rust and moves a great deal more then most DeLorean people are willing to admit.

The DeLorean is a body on frame type construction. A fiberglass "tub" sits on a the frame, and the stainless steel panels are bolted to the tub.

Oh damn! Just before Monocoque construction. That's too bad. I can see why it would move that much.

Still one of my favorite cars.

Are you moving out into a shop of your own? Need a ton of space to remove everything and set it aside while your building things. Im thinking your one car garage complete with your *ladder* and misc other stuff ain't gonna cut it.

Get the dam car finished so we can see some dyno runs.,

The frame-off will require some space and of course a frame jig (or a really flat floor) so I'm not entirely sure what I will do. There is limited space at my house and it would be impractical to rent a shop for the entire build. This one may have to wait until I actually buy a house with a decent sized garage, but until then I can at least drive the stock DeLorean around, which is still cool.

There used to be a guy around here (Mississauga) that drove around in a Delorean with plates that read "OUTATIME". It was wicked. The thing must have been his daily driver because I saw him a few times a week during the summer.

He's a member of the DML, but I forget his name. We've probably met a few times at least.
