COP just pulled me over.

Yes I just got in from work but I feel like venting and the family is sleeping.(Like all other normal people) Hence this post.

I left my office at Yonge/Eglinton travelling west on Eglinton and made it a little over a couple of blocks before I see headlights approaching me at high speed. A second later the cherries. I pull over and this is the transcript of my conversation with the cop to the best of my memory.

Officer: That is quite the illegal muffler you have there.

Me: Actually I have multiple mufflers but I have developed a leak.

Officer: You didn't hear me, I said it was illegal. Give me your license, ownership and insurance.

Me: Is it ok if I step out of the vehicle to retrieve the documents?

Officer: Yes

(I get out of the vehicle)

I go in my pocket and pull out my little flip wallet that has my license in it. I give it to him and he is glaring at me.

Officer: You are making me nervous can you please get back in the car.

Me: I need to be out of the car to retrieve the ownership from one of the storage bins behind my seat.

He nods in approvement.

I can't find it in the first bin.

Me: I will be moving around the car to the other side to go through the passenger side storage bin.

Officer: I will be waiting in my car.

Me: Here is my ownership, I cannot find my current license card but his is the last one that just expired.

Officer: Is the car insured?

Me: Off course!

Officer: How do I know that it is insured?

Me: You don't! I should have my insurance card with me. If you wish to write me a ticket go ahead but could you please hurry up as I have had a long day and I wish to sleep before I have to start the working day all over again.

Officer: Sir, please have your insurance card with you next time.

Me: Goodnight

Now that I typed out the post I am realizing that it could have been alot worse but the officer's disgusting attitude towards me is what got me upset. I am still dressed in a suit from the days work and he is talking to me like I am hiding WMDs in the car. I was actually looking forward to a ticket so I could tear him a new a-hole in court but alas all I am left with is this post.

Anyhow goodnight all.

Other than the whole aspect of getting rousted by a cop looking for something that was serious enough to nail you with, I think you should be sorta happy. The officer said that you made him nervous!!!!!!!

How could big ol' lovable Scrappy Doo make anybody nervous, LOL.

Seriously, I really liked the way you defused the situation by keeping calm and taking command of the interaction by asking his permission to do the things you wanted to do. I use that all the time in business as it makes the other party feel like they are in control and relaxes the discussion and you get what you want done in a backdoor kind of way. I think the officer realized pretty quickly that he was out of his depth and took the first face saving way out.

Take a couple of deep breaths and maybe sometime when we meet I can tell you about all the times I was pulled over by Durham Regionals Finest back in the late '70's (when dinosaurs walked the earth). He!!, one time they even slashed my seats looking for drugs!!!!!!!!

illegal muffler? wat the hell did the cop mean by illegal muffler?
did he meant to say your muffler was really loud?
maybe the cops drunk 8-)
ah well, good thing you were not in richmond hill, those cops are nasty,
2 weeks ago, on a friday night, cops set up one of those spot check on highway 7 near leslie, that makes you take the breathalizer test, except when i saw a low to the ground integra and civic just parked in the spot check area, i knew it was no breathalizer test.

It's unfortunate these cops are profiling people this way.
It appears everyone is on a power trip lately.
A couple of RX-8 guys lost their rides recently, simply because a "riced" out Civic were ahead of them. Everyone got pulled over and everyone lost their ride.

I would have love to see the cop turn sour on Scrappy Doo. Poor guy wouldn't know what hit him!

I avoid driving my car at night. Especially around the Dudebridge and York region area. Way too many cops with huge egos and everyone is mad with power!

The cop claims he saw everyone "street racing". So he decided to pull everyone over and take their rides.
To correct a few things, it wasn't a Civic it was a Golf. And the guys were driving back home, slightly high reving, but never going above the speed limit. Unfortunately all of our cars make great sounds in the upper rev range. Enough to catch the cops attention.

It's not just the GTA, it's Ontario wide, but I guess to some Torontonians there is nothing outside of the GTA. We all have to put up with the BS law; and we all have to deal with it, when you modify a car you know you are going to be hastled at some point or another, just part of the game.

Now a stupid GTA law is the on that your fearless leader Miller passed on hand guns, and the only safe place to fire them, and there are still people being shot, not by legal guns, but ones smuggled into Canada from other countries, but thats another thread all on it's own.

When it comes down to it, it's all about politics, and getting that extra vote, and they use the police services as their little puppet.

yea what i meant when i said this area of city was that, espically this part of the city, or even more specificly, richmond hill
the amount of cars lost to impound weekly due to "street racing assumptions" is just ridiculus.
and of course i know other places exist outside of GTA
truthfuly, i know GTA stands for greater toronto area, but i still have no clue of which part of toronto the GTA is,

FYI on muffler too loud

Hello

If I may just add for future reference. If your car is a 93 and soon to be 94's then its now 15 years old. Next time you get pulled over remind the officer that your vehicle is 15 years old and thus considered a classic and thus does not fall under the regular law that the muffler must not be louder than stock form. I am not 100% sure of this but pretty sure its the case. Now that does not mean you can drive a extremely loud anything late at night and disturb the neighborhood. I think it falls under the same exemption of the rule that allows you to import a car from the US if 15 years or older without requiring any mods to conform to Canadian federal laws and duty exempt etc....

Oh, and glad you did not get a ticket.

Max

Should be happy thats all that happend.
The other week, I get pulled over for my exhaust (I actually had a new muffler put on and was told it was street legal). But then he tells me the previous owner was required to have an inspection done because of the muffler. They then tow my car and it took me $400 and a whole day to get my car back...******.

I'm glad you managed to get off without any trouble. I never seem to be as lucky. In a way i'm kinda glad i have a generic muffler on my FD. Doesn't sound as nice, but it doesn't attract unwanted attention either.

the 'street racing' legislation was the biggest piece of unconstitutional crap that has ever managed to make it into law. I personally love that the cops can pull me over and cornhole me for doing absolutely nothing, if they want to. That's why i just had to fight a speeding ticket from when i had my SRT4. Not speeding, but the officer has a hard-on for import / tuner cars. Same thing with the exhaust noise harassment that i used to get. I started actually keeping a copy of the exhaust diagram from the FSM in the glove box to prove that it's not supposed to have a muffler. At least my FD isn't as big a heat-score, so far.... (fingers crossed)

Wait, there was only one cop, yet everyone stopped?
What the hell?
Let him have the riced out civic, and just continue on your way....

wtf is an illegal muffler....? LOL Good to hear the cop didn't try anything, and I like how they speed and weive through traffic just for the chance to harass you for your muffler.

Maybe they have nothing to do, maybe we have a surplus of cops.... I personally support cutbacks in that department, since all they do if file reports, and tell me to contact my insurance. But that's another story.......

When we put this mazda together we hid the muffler and pointed the tip down. There's nothing there for cops to point their finger at!

The car is still abit loud at idle but we've never been stopped, Its a full 3 inch exhaust so you have an idea of it's sound.

I've also gotten off a few times with the work uniform on.....tie and all. Cops don't usually expect "professionals" to be driving performance vehicles.

What muffler are you running?
