Red face calgary: my car update + fix my car/rx7 meet

well, today i was at chev's. i dunno where to start.......first of all we still couldn't find that vac leak. we were trying to smooth out the idle today. seems like if the bov is vented to the atmosphere the idle gets all rough. there were a few things we pulled and put back in that smoothed out the idle at first, then it got all rough again when we try to lower the idle. currently car is idling at 2k, the tps seems really faulty. adjustments did little for idle TODAY. it did plenty yesterday. it just works when it wants to.

we also lacked some tools *ahem*multimeter*ahem*, so i suggest an rx7 meet sometime to.........fix my car haha. since a few people have asked to help my car, it would be cool to have everyone all together with all the right tools. i dunno if it sounds like a gd idea with the last meet just a week ago. let me know, if it doesn't work then i'll just take my car to one appointment at a time . since chris, chev and dragoon wanted to fix my car they'll decide. its not an official meet, i just think its easier to get all of them together, then whoever wants to come learn from them or just watch just drop by.

I'm free tomorrow morning-early afternoon .. if chev doesn't mind utilizing his place to work at, give him a call and tell him to give me a call tomorrow (friday) earlier, the better (well... any time after 9am) .. shouldn't take more than an hour to get your car purring like a kitten.. as for getting a buncha people together to troubleshoot.. while it sounds like a good idea, I find that sometimes too many cooks spoil the broth.. everyone has their own ideas and suggestions about how things are supposed to work.. you get a bunch of people trying to diagnose the same thing at the same time and things are more than likely to get messy.. but that's just my opinion...

Ya often people have different approaches and idea's regarding how to fix something like that.. it can get irratating. If Chris has problems tuning it out let me know, and then we will see what we can do

I don't know if this could be the case with rotaries, but I know when a Supra once had the roughest idle of all time, it was an electrical problem, some wiries losing contact, so once they were jiggled around, it would go smooth again.

Ahhh yes.. some females can fix almost anything by just "jiggleing" the right things....

the funny thing though is................chev know's my number, but i dunno his............trying to call everyone on the caller id now haha.

no gd, called all the numbers around that time that chev called me, but either they're wrong numbers, i hear a answer machine that doesn't specify where i call to, or this one weird number that once i try to call it doens't ring.........with a area code that isn't 403. would probably be better if you get a hold of chev instead, chris, cause i dunno how haha.

hmmmm, that weird number rings now, just no one answering.

Laugh.. somehow, hearing you say the word "frisky" sounds a lot less gay then hearing someone like Max say that...

As for your temp gauge install.. let us know what kind of temps you end up seeing during cruise and idle ... Mr. Eric just bought himself an FD and according to his temp gauge (defi) he sees about 210C during idle ... that can't be good or right.. but what do I know about stupid fds? and I call them stupid because I was given the opportunity to drive his... then had to climb back into my good ol 80's rocker car and drive home...stupid fd.. I'll never be satisfied with annie again...

I actually ran into Chev driving home from washing my car.... unfortunately he had to go to a birthday party this afternoon so it kind of kills today... we can try for tomorrow if you'd like? I prefer to do it earlier in the day when it isn't so damn hot and have a buncha mosquitos biting away.... Before lunch would be good I think.. Max is going to be back into town around noonish sometime, and I belive a few of us would be getting together.. so it would be perfect if we could get it done before then....

By the way, is it true that you got soaked for almost $1000 to install a boost gauge and cold airbox? only to have your stock bov open vented ?

i still don't have my receipt mailed to me, at the end i paid 1700. wat was done to the car and no 'diagnosing' would be boost guage(mine got stolen), cold air intake, removed abs. everything else is done for the purpose of 'trying' to find the 'problem'. i had more losts since my brand new bov got stolen .

tmr would be gd. you and chev should set a time and place and i'll be there. i'm free tmr. it would be gd to have a little get together within a week of the last one

My FC is out and about. I could always drop by. I dont have much experience with Turbo II's. I would like to learn. Maybe someone can help me hook up my MSD properly. I did it perfect on my buddys Supercharged FB but for some reason I cant seem to get it to work on my FC.

hey, sorry it took me so long to reply, 'just' got on the net now since last night. sat, july 2 is good, also morn is perfect, my nieghbor came over and told us to quite down because of the racket eoph's car makes. umm, im still trying to get a hold of eoph, chris, then ill give you a call for time. speaking of checkin the throttle plates, i did push them 'more' shut with a screw driver last night, which did help the idle lower, but it still had a violent shake. i noticed too, all the block off plates just use tube gaskets, i wanted to pull of the back ones(egr).. where the vac noise is coming from,to see if any of the gaskets had failed. but i only have tube gasket which takes an hour to set. i have a feeling the leak is between the uim and the lim. maybe we can deicide when we get together. eoph, i gave your sister/whoever my phone number @ 10pm, gimme a call tommorrow around 9am, then i can call chris to see when hes free.

got a lot done on my car today. found the 2 vac leaks, put on a stock tid on so the bov vents back into the system. set the timing...........was 90 degrees off. tried to set the tps as low as we could, but only got to 1.7 at best. the car runs great, the only real biggy is the turbo lag taht shouldn't exist with the stock turbo.

Pulls pretty hard from what Nubian told me. Ya those timing marks didnt even line up properly. So much for the shop owners 'years of experience'. Runs real good now.

the car is runs strong, nice motor. if i have around 190hp, im guessing that car has 220hp at least. we fluked on one of the vac leaks, the bac was removed and a nipple put on it. when i brushed my hand against the nipple, it had a massive tear on the side you cant see. the throttle body mod has been done to the car. is still quite jerky in low rpm. im guessin it prolly can be smoothed out a bit. other than forgetting to tighten down one ic tube, and something else, we managed to get the car running great. 600-750rpm idle, surpisingly, it has good idle hold when lots of load is on the car(lights, brakes, and heater on). doesnt stall. im gonna read up on how to set the tps, bought a multi meter, but dont know how to use it Eoph, you left the cold air intake at my house, gimme a call when you want to grab it. i hope your car runs good for you.

on a side note: SHAME ON YOU ADAM!

if my dumbass can get the prob fixed for free...

oh, thanks to shawn for his lesson in engine timing! havent gotten that far yet

Glad to hear you guys got the car running better Chev.. I appologize for not getting back to you.. this morning was basically taken up looking after another car's fuel leak problem.. unfortunately my phone does not have any reception out where we were.. ended up being out there later than expected and was late for my little "date" night with the girl.. just got home ...

But heck, you sound like you're getting the hang of knowing what to look for when it comes to idle problems.. practice makes perfect (at least for most people..)and I'm glad you arn't afraid to turn wrenches and learn about the car...
Epoh has got to be one happy camper to finally have a driveable vehicle..

As for commenting on how the car came out of adam's shop in worse shape than when it went in.. .I won't say too much.. since most of it has already been said in the past... however, this is the 3rd case I have heard of, where a car goes into the shop in good state of tune, to get some unrelated work done (install some parts) only to come out running like crap.. then the customer is given the sorry excuse of the problem being with their wiring harness.. and how it could be fixed once they replace the whole harness or go standalone...

The guy goes in to get a cold air box installed along with a few other minor items, and ends up getting taken advantage of to the tune of $1000+.. and gets the car returned in barely running condition! that's just not right...

I'll give you a call sometime in the afternoon tomorrow (sunday) Chev.. again my appologies for being absent today..

when i was boosting a little on the way back the car was at 11 psi. i adjusted it down a little when i got home. hopefully its at 10 psi. i am paranoid with the motor blowing after that ic tube got loose twice today haha. actually the the hesitation i am quite confident it is the tps. becuase i read a tps set too high would cause something like that. i was surprised the throttle body mod was done to the car, i thought i knew everything that had been done already. yeah, i'll give you a call when i need that back. still deciding on wat i should do, drill a hole on the tid or just get an aftermarket bov. was cool seeing gary's supercharged fb today. hope to hear it running some time, hopefully in a meet hopefully not too far from now .

when me and corey were playing with the tps, we could never set to the correct setting. we basically 70% concluded that the tps was bad.

Thanks for the ride in the TII. We'll get together when you get all the parts and blast that tranny off and install the new clutch.

As for timing, I think Timing is one of the most important parts on a rotary. Even 1 Degree can make all the difference. That TII's timing (according to the marks) was about 90 Degrees off. It ran with all the problems it had at that setting, but when placed at TDC 0 Degrees, car wouldn't run. After we solved everything, I checked the timing at least 5 times and it runs awesome now.

Nice work on getting to the bottom of the proplem boy's. No better way to learn than to just dive in.

I would suggest someone always be leary of ANY SHOP trying to sell them something to solve a problem that only arised AFTER the car was at that shop. Unfortunately this is not the first case like this I've heard about. I could give you the name of at least one who was pushed into buying a standalone to solve a problem that never really exsisted Live and learn, I did.
