Anyone know anything about emissions testing?

So, I'm really not sure about any of this, as this is my first car. A friend of mine told me that because my '85 GS is 28 years old, I don't have to get it E-tested. Does that also mean that I could TECHNICALLY go as far as pulling off stuff without worrying about the emissions?

Thanks guys

Tim

Yes, there is zero testing for you. Do whatever you want.

Technically Yes.
Legally, you may have a problem if you go through one of those "pull you over to check your stuff" lanes.

my 87 TII has a 3" turboback straight pipe. one time i ran some shitty premix my buddy was driving behind me and said it was burning his eyes hahaha, peope woulld pull up beside me and ask what i was running in that thing lol
Take that Hippies!!!

my FD is RHD so it goes under the hot rod rule, with the stock exhaust and airpump my nox was 32ppm and the limit was 2800ppm lol so there was lots of room for improvement hahahaha

my mx3 had a klze so it got to go under the hotrod rule and could pass with a hollowed out cat

the mto can screww you over pretty bad if they pull you over tho, I've saw them sitting on the side of the road in their corolla or what ever they are and try to pull out after me but thats usually my cue to pass a few cars (in a safe an courteous manner of course) if they dont have their lights on im definitely not waiting around for them to catch up

I've been pulled over by the MTO guys... They knew to check for the airpump and even used a temperature gun thing on the cat to "check if it's hollowed or not" as he put it.
Even without e-testing on an older car, they can ticket you and make you get an e-test within the next 10 days or something like that. I had to do it and fax the results to the guy since my airpump wasn't hooked up at the time.
I'd risk it, just because emission laws SUUUUUUCCCKKK

That would genuinely suck. Well, I guess I'll just leave it for now.

I AM and MTO guy, I promise you that you're wrong. We dont check emissions, nor do we stop passenger plated vehicles.

You meant to to say you were stopped by MOE (Ministry of the Environment).

Does anyone know if it will work the same for an 87? I think its the 25 year mark that doesn't require emissions, right?

87 is the last year for vehicles exempt. Even if the car is exempt all emission control devices must be present to be fully legal.
Does MOE have technicians that work for them? I thought it was the MTO. Either way if you get pulled over and they find your car to be missing any of the required emission control devices or systems you will more than likely receive a fine.

Yes you're right actually. The green striped cars with lights on top. My mistake!

Sooo, were I in Ontario, if I swap a turbo 13B in my car ('91 Sport), I'd be expected to be emissions legal, but if were to swap an LS in (or whatever piston engine), I'd be under the "hotrod" rule and could ditch emission controls legally? Just asking for clarity, since AB has no rules about emissions at all that I'm aware of; I run a single high flow cat, and still have my air pump, but the only reason for the cat is because STS rules require it, and for years I didn't have one.

If this could possibly be true before I have to go for sticker renewal, I would be overjoyed!!!
Tired of paying for BS emissions.

It's not the MTO that pulls over all the people in hamilton on the way to CSCS to check if their vehicles are unsafe?

I'll find out soon.I got an 88 in the garage.I just put all the stock emissions stuff back on.
Last owner thought he was an Auto-x Expert. He may have been but I went through that car with a fine tooth comb...I shook my head.
Now it is mechanically top notch, but it needs an Etest, and I am still on the interior.I need tunes.
so soon..it shall be done!

More or less. You still need to meet emissions output standards for the model year or the vehicle. All you need to pass an emissions test is a catalytic converter and fuel cap. However you can still get ticketed for missing emissions components.

Roughly..:around this time??

"In Canada and the rest of the northern hemisphere, the first day of the spring season is the day of the year when the Sun crosses the celestial equator moving northward (on March 20th or 21st). This day is known as the Vernal Equinox."

if you are in a RHD car you should apply for "grey market vehicle" status

ditto for cars with swapped engines ("hot rod" status)

do this at least two weeks in advance of doing your etest

call the drive clean info line and they will e-mail you a form
