s-4 t2 project

Well, I sold my 91na a while ago and got a 88t2 w/out engine for 600$. I have been in japan for the last 3 years so I finally got back stateside so I can try to do this thing! I am shooting for 300-400hp but we'll see later on down the road what it ends up being... I hope to make it into a weekend fun/track car. I bought a s4 T2 and whole drivetrain swap from a forum member here (Messinian7). The car is in Wisconsin so I will have to get it to SD after I am done rebuilding all this stuff. Here are the pics so far, just picked up the pallet last week. Just thought that with people seeing this stuff as I am doing it they could give me some pointers as this will be my first rebuild and ... first with a lot of stuff, lol. Never done a turbo before... So I might need some help down the road.....

edit: good thing I just bought a truck last week, lol! Also got a 86 corolla w/bilsteins and 20v silvertop conversion, anyone want it? lol...

I thought this was going to be a us motor... The absence of an EGR valve means this might be a j-spec motor, right? That's what my buddy just told me... The only difference is the emissions stuff right?? Also took out the pilot bearing, I might need a new one now, lol! Needs to be replaced anyhow so I figured what the hell. Just trying to get the flywheel nut off now, man it's on there good!! Just received junkie serpentine pully kit and brand new rotor bearings from a forum member here too for a real steal! I wanna try to make this reliable, lol!

Edit: The 2nd to last pic is an s6, just finished my roomate install a new motor and this is the one that was shooting coolant all over the place

It DOES have an EGR. Your 3rd post, 4th picture shows it. It's the diaphram right above/behind the turbo turbine housing. The twin-scroll actuator is forward mounted, you have a precat and the air pump is not j-spec, so it's US-spec.

Ohh, I see. I thought the EGR valves were mounted on top of the intermediate iron...

edit: Another reason I need you guys to check over all my work, lol!

I got a bigger impact wrench and got the front/rear bolts off but I still can't get the flywheel off the darn thing! I think I'll pick up a little propane torch and see what I can do with that...

do yourself a favor and get an air compressor and impact gun. The impact gun makes getting the flywheel nut off pretty easy, and it's nice to use compressed air to clean stuff out.

I wanted to but my roomate said it would be to loud, that's why I got the electric impact wrench. I already got the flywheel bolt and front bolt off, just can't get the flywheel off. I already mentioned that I might need to get a small torch of some sort to get some heat on it...

I know, I know, but that's not the problem... I said twice already that I got the flywheel nut off already. I also got the front bolt off as well. I am just having a hard time getting the flywheel to remove itself from the e-shaft .

ah, put the nut back on loosely and bang the outer edges with a dead-blow hammer or a regular hammer and a piece of wood. Worked like a champ for me.

Well, after beating the crap out of it for a few minutes I stood back and it just shrugged it off. I took a small torch and heated it up for about 15-20 min or so because the damned thing is so small . Well after about 20 hits or so she finally cracked loose!!

BTW, the 2nd pic shows where I thought the EGR was supposed to go, you guys sure?

So I finally got the rest apart tonight, I'll have to do some cleaning and see what's all salvageable some other time... Pics are better than me describing anything so here they are, BTW why do ya think this motor died?? I don't think it looks all that bad, all the seals are stuck though! But the rubber corner seal plugs are all still in it too, I thought they burned out fairly quickly?? What gives?

you said yourself that all the seals were stuck, wouldn't that stop it from running or are you not talking about apex seals?

Yeah, I was talking about the apex seals, side seals and corner seals. They are all stuck really good, might take a lot of soaking in cleaning solution to remove them. But I was under the impression that the engine has been sitting for a year or so and I assumed that was the cause... Also, it couldn't have been running for too long because all the rubber plugs for the side seals are all still there, they usually burn away fairly quickly, correct??

Maybe the motor just got to carboned up? Would this be from running oil that doesn't burn very well??

yeah my guess is that it just got all built up with carbon and lost compression

oiled air compressors (the more expensive ones) are WAY quieter than the oiled one. The oil-less ones are almost as loud as a jackhammer, but the oiled ones just have a dull drone to them.

Only S4 NA blocks have the EGR there. S4 Turbos have it on the LIM like I said before. And then S5s have no EGRs at all.

There's a lot of rust and carbon build up on those rotors. It's no wonder all the apex seals are stuck.

A good clean up of the parts will also help to find any potential problems, or past reasons why the engine died.
