Yeah I know. I'm just not sure of the standard hot idle pressure of a 10296. Thats why I said it, and I wanted to make sure LOF know i wasnt running the OEM pump.

Installed a mechanical gauge in port where the digital sender was previously located. I'm getting 45psI at cold idle, 25 hot idle, cruising at 1500rpm I was getting 30-35, and WOT around 4500 - 5000rpm 50-55psi.

Doesn't seem like enough on the top end to me.

I'm a little low on oil. Going to put 6.5 quarts of 10w30 tomorrow when I change the oil and see what happens.

I just read on the LS forums that the fbody pan holds over 8 quarts of oil, and a lot of guys are running 7.5. I think this may be my problem. I've been running 5 quarts.

I couldnt take it anymore and had to go outside and drain the oil so I could have a look. What I found does not look good. Lots of fine metal dust. I'm really hoping this is from the cam bearings. I think im going to be sick.

fill it up, run it around a bit, and drain again, I'm sure its from the cam you put it breaking in cause that looks really fine. I wouldn't spew chunks yet. New filter and fill and go

I was thinking that (wishful thinking). I started reading about cams, as this is my first time dealing with a pistion engine to this extent.

What I read was that roller cams dont need to break in like flat tappet cams, because the bearings float on the oil.

I really hope youre right. I'll be changing the oil when I get off work tonight.

I'd like to also add that I read about 15 different LS posts about dust in the oil, and every one of them ended with engine failure. I'm sickened.

Also, it doesnt seem to be magnetic.

What spring did you put in the pump? I run it with the blue low pressure spring, which makes it close to stock. I run 20w50 oil though.

Pretty sure im running the blue spring. whatever came in it. I didnt change it.

What do you think about the particles in my oil? Did you do a cam swap? Notice anything in your oil?

You didn’t change the cam bearings did you? Just the cam?

That does not look good, but I think the flash is making it look worse. Fill it up with oil and see if you still have oil pressure issues. The 10296 comes with the red high pressure spring installed. Are you sure you got the o ring on the pick up seated in the pump? That can cause low or weird oil pressure. You should have a lot of oil pressure with the red spring.

If the pickup is not sealed by the o ring properly, you’ll have high RPM oil pressure issues and areation of the oil that could kill the bearings.

Ok so... replaced the engine oil with 6.5 fresh quarts of 10w30 and changed the filter.
Pressure is now:

Cold idle 60psi
Hot idle 45psi
Cruising 55-60psi
WOT 80psi!

So I got the pressure back. I forgot to add I was running pig rich for about 20 miles to the exhaust shop due to open headers. The old oil smells very much like fuel. I believe it was diluted, and the filter may have been clogged. I went for a test drive today but unfortunately I didnt make it very far. Like a moron, i burned a hole in the nylon tubing for the mechanical gauge and spent the remainder of the day working on the side of the road.

I'm going to drive It 150 miles or so and drain the oil again and see what I have.

My phone is acting up. Please excuse the above post for any grammar issues. It won't let me edit.

And to answer your question LOF, I didnt change the cam bearings, just the cam, and I'm sure I didn't pinch the oring.

Yea you have good oil pressure. Run it and see what happens. Keep an eye on it when the oil gets hot just to be sure. Should be about 20 PSI or more at hot idle.

250 mile oil change and im still seeing some dust. Some of the LS1 guys said if you cant feel it between your fingers its probably fine. Others were talking about COMP cams have some issues with improper lobe hardening, and that could be the dust.

Anywhoo, Ive sent an oil sample to Blackstone, I'll get back with the results.

I haven't updated in a while because I've been out enjoying the car. Oil pressures have been good. I had a harness pin issue that was two 5v circuit codes, that's been fixed. Had to relocate trans cooler. Haven't seen trans temps over 120f. And I burned a M5. Enjoying the car so far. Working on getting the smog done.

The front needs a little negative camber I think.

With the Z wheels I was really going for functionality. Cheap light wheels and 8.5 in the rear for some good traction. Then I threw functionality out the window when I decided I now care more about cosmetic. Some chinese stretched tires, and these wheels are 26lbs a piece! Fun though, I lit them up through 2nd gear and could have kept going. To be perfectly honest though, the car seems a lot easier to throw around, seems lighter. Dont know if it was the tires or what.
