Old picture, but I have done a new gauge-holder once for my old FC.
Moved the stereo up a bit, so could three gauges take place below...

How do you even sit in it? Lol, between the roll cage and bucket seats, it looks like you'll have a broken tailbone every time you sit down xD

Haha, it's not that bad really, I can slip in and out pretty easily by holding on to the top rollcage bar.

Just spent the last few days reading through this thread from start to finish and I must say it is a truly inspirational build. I wish I had the skills and the knowledge (and the access the the tools:egrin:) that you have. Look forward to seeing the completion of your build.

I don't know if I missed it in the thread but what transmission are you planning to use?

I was going to use the FC turbo box to begin with (mainly because it's cheap) but now I'm leaning towards a Tremac 5 speed and doing it properly first time. Green Brothers in New Zealand make a belhousing to convert to the rotary engine so that's easy for me.

I'm going to be using FC turbo transmissions, lot's of them :). I really want a dogbox transmission, but I'm too cheap for one. I looked into building a relatively simple one myself, but that's just as expensive as buying a used one. (hardened and ground gears out of 9310 are expensive!) I even looked into adapting an motorcycle transmission, motorcycles have a primairy gear ratio before the trans, which lowers the input shaft rpm which increases torque, so those transmissions can take more torque than the bike's power output make it seem. I've seen a GSX-R1000 transmission next to a subaru impreza wrc dogbox transmission, and the size difference really isn't that huge as you would think. Difference is that a motorcycle transmission last for 100.000km's, impreza wrc transmission last like 1000km. But anyway, they probably would cause a lot of troubles when hammering and drifting a 4-rotor around, not having a reverse gear also sucks, I would try if if I was building a PP 2-rotor though.

Nice!, but that space is pretty much occupied, I've got some controls and warning lights there

I like the top of the dash better too, easier to look at the gauges while driving.

Lightweight-ing the doors, I see?

Ryuske 10-23-12 01:03 PM

What are those warning lights and two toggle switches for?

clokker 10-23-12 10:10 PM

Clever remount of the stock switches but the lights and toggles...um, I guess I'd expect something carved from billet or more exotic.
Those look so normal.

Sorry John, you've set your bar so impossibly high.

Well, not really. I left most of the doors intact because the stock door latches, locks, power windows and power mirrors are still there. But the door cards have to go because the armrests (where the window en mirror switches are) hit the rollcage. I am planning on using the top part of the door cards though, because the opening latch is in there as well as a ventilating piece. The bottom half of the door cards will probably be replaced with aluminium sheet.

This might make it more clearer, I need a few more switches and lights though :)

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-t...2/CIMG2604.JPG

The top warning lights pretty much speak for themselves, I know the shift light is pretty useless but I had the ecu output already wired so I just added it. The surge tank warning light lights up when the small fueltank in the front of the engine bay is low on fuel, there is a fuel level sensor in there.

The bottom left 2 toggle switches are for cutting the fuel and turning on the cooling fans. The ecu normally handles the fueling and cooling relays but being able to manually turn the cooling relay on or the fuel relay off can come in handy, warning lights above both switches indicate that their activated.

The bottom right toggle switch is hooked to the ecu, it can be programmed to do multiple things. The turning knob above the switch is also wired to the ecu, it can also be programmed and used for multiple things, like modifying injection duration, ignition advance, start limiter rpm, launch control values ect. It can be useful to make adjustments during driving without having to take out the laptop.

Yeah sorry about that :), I'm a more of a mechanical gearhead, not a designer. Form follows function all the way!
Plus I got to use a buddy's giant cnc lasercutter to cut out the aluminium, only took like 10 seconds to cut and fits perfect :icon_tup:

Shhhht, don't tell anyone ;)

Made a gauge pod today, I wanted to replace the idiot light panel with a center gauge pod, but couldn't find a decent one made for an FC that I could use. Those universal pod's also weren't an option because they look cheap and don't fit the fc dash at all. I also didn't want to modify or build a plastic one myself because plastic isn't my thing. So since I was already putting in lot's of aluminium sheet stuff in the car I figured why not use it for the gauge pod aswell, so I came up with this:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-O...2/CIMG2612.JPG

I'll need to check if it's not too shiny while driving but I can always paint it black or sandblast it or something.

Narfle 10-25-12 01:11 AM

Panda style. Love it.
I like your gauge pod, too!

Omega- 10-25-12 05:09 AM

Only managed to get through a small selection of the posts, but this is indeed an immense build. Well done, good sir.

GeenIdee 10-25-12 11:37 AM

I tried to make a warning light for my surge tank but i failed :P

Shadowscreed 10-25-12 03:04 PM

I'd paint match the gauge pod to the dash or do black to darken it down a little, too brite

Are you starting to feel like a backstreet boy yet? If you dont please remember the loser on rx7club the first meet you take this beauty too and see the huge crowed around it and you finally do feel like a Backstreet boy.
hahah

Havoc 10-26-12 12:10 AM

you might want to give it a little sun visor though :)

cheap_sticker05 10-27-12 04:07 PM

Been following this thread since the beginning. I can't even tell you how awesome it is!

Nah those are over-rated, I pulled mine out :)

I like the center console with the old school switches and lights. Kinda reminds me of Darth Vader's center console.

So it totally goes with the stormtrooper paint job. :icon_tup:

What happened :)? It's the easiest thing ever, I just got a simple fuel level sensor, mounted the sensor in the tank, wired it along with a warning light and done.

Did some more work, the dashboard is finally in place for good this time. I need a few more things to finish the interior up but it's getting there :)
I think I'm going to start with the front suspension tomorrow, lot's of work to be done there also
