BC The time has come..

4 weeks ago I picked up a SA22 with rebuilt (67,000 KMS ago) engine, FC tranny, RB header, after market gauges, 14" steel chrome plated rims, etc.

Was also told the engine has been port matched but no real details pertaining to what has actually been done in that respect.

The body is totally shot, most of it is paper thin and/or rotted away..

Paid $400.00

The guy also had an 83 GSL I bought for an additional $400.00. it has fresh new paint and some other new +'s like new alternator, rebuilt carb, etc..

Apparently the engine on this one has a blown rotor and most the front end is torn apart already for it to be pulled..

With the 2 cars I also got a spare 12A (wrecker engine that's supposed to be good), spare moon roof, spare sun roof, spare hood, wiper motors, headlight motors, 2 rear wings, etc, etc...

I picked up the later car and parts this past weekend.

Since tomorrow is the start of my weekend its time to decide which engine I am going to put in the FB. The SA runs and drives but to me it sure has a lack of power and speed, so I think first thing I will do is run a compression test and see where it is at.

I would also like to check the spare engine but is that easily possible not being installed in anything?

The SA is being fully stripped for part out and the shell will get crushed once all salvageable items are removed.

The FB will be a daily driver..

Sounds like you have a busy time ahead; I hope all goes well and you enjoy your new all-consuming hobby.

I'll be interested to see what a 'blown rotor' looks like. More likely a bad apex seal, but who knows?

looking forward to see what you can salvage from one and add to the other .

Hopefully both your spare sun/moon roof pieces are from the FB, not interchangeable SA - FB

I'll have some pics up tomorrow.. Got called into work this morning so getting a chance to touch cars today after all..

This is not a new "hobby" to me either, I have owned 6 7's in total now..

Spare sun/moon roofs are indeed for the fb.. Not that I care for my uses they are listed in the CAN classified section.

Thanks for the comments thus far, I look forward to sharing more soon.

Well sorry to keep people waiting for pics. This morning I woke up to a blizzard (I don't have a shop to work in) so once again my plans were foiled.. I did however change spark plugs, air filter and alternator on the SA's engine today.. Couple days ago I also did a full oil change with $85.00 worth of premium synthetic! And before some debate starts over the later, there is no oil metering pump which should be enough said for those in the know..

I took the SA for a drive up the mountain when I was finished and the performance was very notably improved, So I have decided soon as I get a warm sunny day I'll be swapping the engine into the FB.

The blown engine will be torn down and used as a mantle piece for myself and a friend (housing and rotor each). Since I still have one other "supposed" to be good engine that I can have sent away for any custom work or just keep it around as is for a spare which ever the case I decide my be.

I also today put a battery in the FB and looked over its electrical system that I had to put back together since it was mostly torn apart.. Pleasantly its all in good working order..

The paint job has terrible run/sags in the clear coat, so once its up and running I think I'll make a trip to have it detailed and see what sort of magic can be had for a couple hundred bucks!

Another question on my mind is, I am wondering if I should do the windshield swap myself or take it in and let "pros" do the install with my supplied glass...

I saw those listed on kijiji, good luck with the project.

As for the runs & sags, learn how to wet sand and buy a buffer. It will be good hands on experience for you!

before on the right, after first buff on the left

all sanded

after

An another I had

Before (after wet sanding that is)

After sanding and buffing

I must add, all my efforts are self learned and taught from the school of the internet...and some trial and error.

Yours look pretty good..

I talked to a friend today who paints cars for a living and he is willing to come to my place and do the wet sand/polish for $200.00 and to me that's a far better value than doing it myself..

Engines are out and SA's swapped into the FB! Did not get it completely done as I would have liked today thou. Still have the exhaust to swap over a few wire/hoses to connect and fluids to top up, but its almost ready...

I have many thanks to give a friend who showed up and offered a hoist to use and helped wrench all afternoon, making things a hell of a lot easier!

I have run into a hiccup on the distributor wiring and I'm not sure which is the best(easiest) course of action to solve it.. The wiring hook ups are very different and I am wondering if I should just cut wires and make plugs that match if that's possible? or change out distributors all together?

pics of the problem attached:

If I were you, run new wires from the coils to distributor. deal with stock wires later so be sure to secure them properly to prevent any shortage and what not.

Coil + = igniter B
Coil - = igniter C

Now, each coil + will require an 12V from ignition. If you need further info, LMK

Purchase an automotive relay (40amp is adviseable but 30 is fine) being 87 and 87A connected to each coil's + terminal. Before you disconnect everything, use a test light to find a good 12V ignition form the ignition relay's pigtail as you can use this wire to trigger automotive relay. Remove all factor wires from the ignition relay (located between the strut tower and clutch master) including the ignition resistors on the strut tower. If you want to upgrade your alternator to higher amperage, it is now a good time lol

Thanks for the advice and more info, I see this solution gets more and more complicated as you reply.. :P

Maybe I should state that running off to a parts store is not an option and I need this car up and running like yesterday..

Also the more I ponder this dilemma the more I wonder if that little blue box (which I have no idea what it is) on the drivers side shock tower of the SA has anything to do with ignition system, and whether or not I need to be changing it over the the FB as well?

Or once again would it be easier to just change dizzys and therefore be able to use the wiring already in the FB as is?

That's my 2nd favorite interior color of an FB. Real close to 1st.
Rare as hell, gives it a European look.

Alright so after lots of google searching I found the answer I was looking for.

The simplest and most straight forward solution to my distributor dilemma is to swap distributors (which I was fairly certain was the correct course of action to begin with)..

The SA engine (now in the FB) although rebuilt/modified/etc.. was still running a points ignition system, which explains why the wiring for the distributor did not match that of the FB and could not be easily spliced in. All that needs to be done is setting the engine to TDC and swap the dizzys, plug it in with the factory harness, set the timing and it will be good to go!

Not really sure what I want to do with the two spare engines I also now have..

The one out of the FB (with blown rotor seals) is complete and came with a fresh rebuilt nikki, new alt, etc..

And the other one I have laying around is a good conditioned "bare block"

I don't really "need" anything from either of them as I have no intention to keep the FB much past a few more months (Although I am considering picking up another SA that's rust free and not running that I know about for 300.00)

Mostly I am just thinking out loud on this note but I am curious to hear ideas, thoughts or even gain some form of inspiration I suppose..
