Tonight I got a full FC subframe: Everything came out of a 89 GTU is what I was told. It has the full suspension, sway bar, power rack, full hubs/brakes. Everything for 100$ . Still going to need the steering column/shaft out of FC.

I double checked my GSLSE middle iron and sure enough it has places for studs to mount TII engine mounts. I plan to mount this like peejay did in his car. Think this swap can be done with engine in car? Supported by jack/stands while doing it?

The only thing really stopping me from diving in right now is I don't have a angle grinder or welder, so i'll have to have someone do the work for me on the welding and borrow a angle grinder.

I also need custom axles made for my 83 GSL small bearing housing or get a 84-85 car with big bearing housing, swap it in, and get moser axles from re-speed to do 5x114.3 and BB kit in rear.

Looking forward to tight steering, better brakes, and better wheel choices.

The autobahns will be held on to for a future project or sold . I'm sorry, but I just can't justify paying 1400 for a re-speed rack and pinion before shipping. I've wanted quick and nice steering forever. This car needs it too.

It's not a 100% go that i'll do the swap, but i'm planning 100% for it!

I want to sir! I can't get rid of this car though. I'll have a rx3 someday. Right now isn't right though.

FB Swap

Just finished this very swap. I was of the same opinion that Billy's kit, although really nice and I know he put a lot of time in, is expensive. I ended up cutting my rails and raising everything up a couple more inches though because in my opinion the FB rails set the subframe too low in the chasis, but then my car sits really low. You are going to want to pull the engine. You could probably do it in place but it's going to be a major pain. You can check out my build thread for how I did it.

Good luck.

Yeah, I hear you. Bummer. I really don't want to pull the motor. Especially after new paint and i'm bound to scratch something. I guess I will if I have to. I'm not sure though. To do this I need someone who can weld good(mobile) and someone I can trust that will do it for a good price... ughhh...

I'll check out your thread. Thank you!!

I was in the same boat - didn't want to pull the engine, but honestly it's worth the extra effort. You'll want the working room in the engine bay to do it right. Good luck with the swap, keep us posted.
One thing, if I were to do this again I would not have drilled and sleeved the frame for the rear subframe bolt, instead I would have made a bracket off of the FC subframe that uses the steering box and idler arm mounting points. Just something to consider

I remember you and peejay mentioning that. I'll definitely plan to if I do this swap. Pulling the engine is going to make me want to have the engine bay painted lol(600$).. the money never stops with these projects... lol

Lol so true. Thats why I taught myself body/paint work years ago. I'd never be able to afford all the things I want to do haha.

Adding a bracket to attach it to the steering box mounts is on my winter to do list for mine. The bolt I put through the frame has been holding just fine and I have no reason to think it would fail, but using existing holes (the steering box/idler arm mounts) makes for a cleaner appearance in my opinion...

If you take a look at Adsy01's thread here: https://www.rx7club.com/build-threads-293/adsys-s2-rx-7-ongoing-project-s4-subframe-13bt-gt35-82r-lpg-984581/ 2nd page, You can see that's what he did with his swap.

I wish I could. It sounds cleaner with those availabe mounts spots forsure. Thanks for the link. I commented on his thread about it.

It looks like the project will have to wait a couple weeks. I had to go pick up my mule buck from the taxidermy that finished it and I couldn't resist buying a winchester 70 in .338 win mag at the gun shop near buy

I've been thinking when I do the rear end to go with the GSLSE rear end. I do get the benefit of the 4.1 gears, but I was thinking I can just get the new moser axles for it and leave the GSLSE rear brakes since they're bigger than TII rear. Or just buy the 84-85 LSD rear end since I can't find a GSLSE lol.

It's been a while since I saw a SE in person, but I'm pretty sure the rear brakes aren't bigger than the T2 ones...
I agree, the SE suspension is hard to find. You're probably better off going the same route I did - GSL rear with moser axles and the re-speed brake kit...

You're right. I got it mixed up. The rear GSLSE rotors are bigger than the GSLSE fronts. That's what it is.. strange why mazda did that..

Looks very nice 85 fb turbo! Juni does great work. I think you should make a build thread though and post all your pics up there.

Will do.. I'm running 16x9 front and 17x10.5 rear now instead of 16x8.5 and 16x10. Now I have more choices in picking tire size.

Put them side by side, BBS RSs look much better. Now I can easily run 245/35/17 on 17x10.5 and 215/40/16 on 16x9.

Thanks DF^

I ended up getting a 84 GSL big bearing rear end from Hyper4mance2k on the 7th. Thanks again Hyper!

Another part off the list for the 5 lug/FC subframe swap. Should be knocking a few more parts off the list in the next week or two.

While your changing your rear end, I would love to see your exhaust in that area. I want
To put 3in RB set up like yours on my turbo SE project. We should have a Turbo FB convention some day and see how many there are now

A 3in. pipe is a tight fit. Mine has about 2-2.5 clearance over the ford 8.8 i put in my turbo fb. But it can be done.....

'toes...i wanna see that fc subframe swap in a lotta pics. I thought about that but i ended up with the re-speed rack/pinion conversion. Love it !!!

Yupp. Still not sure if I'm ready to jump in and do this project. I want to no doubt though.

Maybe I can get some pictures of the exhaust. My exhaust is 3" all the way back under the axle. I'm in for it!

If I do I will definitely take tons of pictures for everyone. As I said I'm still hesitant on doing it. I just finished a new turbo setup and I have to rip the engine/trans out, subframe, all steering componets, the steering box that I hear is a hassle, and then I can start. Then rear end, axles, rear brakes, etc. Lots of work.

A month from now I'll be getting a 2$ raise. Once I get those checks i'll be more motivated to get it done since I don't want my car sitting for a month.

Good to hear you like the respeed kit. I won't be going that route though if I don't do the FC subframe. If the FC subframe never happens on this car i'll get a new steering box from mazda.
