My 79 "barn find" project
#527
I plan to put it back stock. I collected a new to me carpet which I'll need as mine was kinda nasty and ripped coming out. The SA high back seats have a purple velour (sp?) insert and the drivers side is ripped so I'll have to get that fixed. I had planned to just put them back in as is but if getting the drivers seat fixed means I have to replace the covering, then I'll probably just go all black. Nice and toasty in the summer... Ugghhh.
I'd say reading all this in 24 hours is dedication! Thanks for the compliment!
Me either! I find that if taken in stages I can be patient. If I had to do this with a deadline however, I'd prolly not be as patient.

WTF did I just buy?!?
Thanks siberianchilli! Hope you and everyone is enjoying keeping up with it.
So, I went to the paint supplier that I've been dealing with to get bondo to go over this PPG Epoxy primer, thinking they had something special for it. He says just about anything will go over it, but try this:
Looks innocent enough, right? Then I turn it over and read the label and I see this:
I think I just bought cancer in a can! In case you can't really read it, the label says "suspected of causing genetic defects", "May cause cancer", "Causes damage to organs".
I think I'm gonna take this stuff back!!

That is putty coat, you use that to go over the bondo or body filler, it is used to fill the rough sand scratches from the coarse sand paper. You can use it to fill minor dents. That kind works pretty good and sands fairly easy, I get it on my hands all the time, it don't give me any kind of irritation. If you need body filler, ask them if they have evercoat z- grip, that works really well, and is fairly cheap

Can't go wrong with the RB upholstery kits (not just seat covers). The kits are full

I had to take some days off from work and devoted as much time as I could to getting this thing moving closer down the line to completion. It seems that I was constantly busy, but I think all I got done since last Thursday was finish sanding some of the white lacquer off, built the tent, masked off the car, sprayed on the epoxy primer, took down the tent, chipped up the rest of the tar underlayment/factory sound deadener from the rear of the car, spare wheel area and transmission tunnel near the firewall, discovered another rusted out section in the spare wheel area, cut it out and welded in a new patch (poorly I might add), sealed it and another couple small holes, cleaned the remnants of the factory sound deadener with 5 cans of brake cleaner, cleaned the entire interior up to get ready for POR-15, sealed up some other small holes with POR Patch, attacked a couple of surface rust areas I uncovered, finished electrolyzing two pair of door hinges so I can rehang them ... and finished prepping the bottom of one of the doors for primer (only sprayed the one completely a couple weeks ago). Seems like I did a lot more than that, but I don't think I did. I'm running out of things to tear out or refurbish. I'll post up some pics when I get the interior painted. At that point it will be ready for Dynamat or Damplifier Pro, or whatever I decide to use...

Pics of floors done
Today I finished cleaning up and sanding out some surface rust inside, treated it with the metal ready, and painted the entire inside floor with POR-15. I have to tell you, rust never sleeps. After cleaning out the residue of the sound deadener with brake cleaner, I found lots of areas of surface rust that had to be sanded and wire wheeled. Crazy how much these rust belt cars rust when driven in winter. Never again@!@!!
These few shots are of the area of rust I found between the spare wheel well and the bumper frame. The structural piece was just about totally destroyed by rust so I removed most all of it.
This is what was lurking beneath the tar in the wheel well. I should have known it would be there from my work under the car...
After the wire wheel... LOTS of holes.
What remains of the small structural piece between the bumper frame and the spare wheel well.
Welded in and covered with POR patch. That stuff dried and looked bulletproof. It says that it cannot be sanded so if using on a visible exterior surface to smooth it out.
Here's some pics of the interior before cleaning, after cleaning, and with the POR-15 gloss black I just got done painting.

I couldn't stop staring at it when I was done! I brushed in on from a can. Used a sacrificial cheapo brush.
First frost of the season this morning, so I think I finished it just in time!

I got a quart of the "gloss black" por 15 for my next project. How hard is it? Would a HVLP gun be able to spray it?
Your interior looks Fabulous. I've got a buyer for my gold car so I'll be following your footsteps here soon for my white car build. Can't wait

Thanks Tim! I'm pretty happy with the way it's turned out so far and to be at the point of putting it back together.
How hard is it? It' a self leveling paint and it's a bit thicker than other paint. It's thicker than my epoxy primer was. I think you can spray it, but I've always brushed it on. There's a special thinner for it to clean up with - normal mineral spirits or gasoline doesn't touch it.
Can't wait to see your build!

Daaaaaamn what a build.
I see you're using flux wire, try a little bit more amps on the same speed. I'm welding with argon mix and on my machine I usually are between power 2 and 3 and wire speed 4 that on 0.8mm plate thickness.
Ow yeah nex time if you need to weld on the chassis tubes, but a tube in it so it's stronger and can be used to pick the car up

I think what he means is kinda like what I did in post #350 on the bottom of page 14. I welded in a new section of frame over the rotten section on the passenger side.

Thanks for that idea damic! I wish I had thought of that when I had the floor boards removed. I did take a queue from 82Transam though, and beefed up the bottom of the frame where the jack points are on the front of the frame so that hopefully they don't get bent up anymore...
Haven't had a chance do much with ole Rusty lately, but I did do THIS to my garage door!
Installed the vinyl backed insulation on my garage door and replaced the seal at the bottom so that it will be warmer in the garage this winter. We went to a Christmas party and they had this installed in their garage and had converted the space to a den with a big screen TV and refrigerator, etc. Just a small space heater kept it nice and warm. I was sold at that moment. Only took me a couple hours, a couple beers. Still have lots to do before spring temps allow me to paint the car so this should make the garage a bit more livable.
