Lemons/Chumpcar build
Just figured I would put up some pictures of the 83 RX-7 we built for Lemons/Chumpcar races.
Picked the car up in early December of 2010 for $500.00. It is an 83 GSL with a 5.0/T-5 combo that has a mild cam. It was not running due to a dead fuel pump. A father/son project that was stalled when the son went to college and got a job out of state. The first race was a Lemons event on New Years 2011 at PBIR (old Moroso). We bought an Autopower bolt in cage, an aluminum race seat and freshened the brakes and went racing.
The car was stupid fast in a straight line but we went through 11ish sets of pads and lost the brakes completely with about 15 minutes left. Nothing to write home about when turning since we were running 13 inch Sumitomos. Passing people at 130 mph (gear limited) was fun but not being able to stop was a little nerve racking.
We are running the 14 hours of Sebring Chumpcar race this coming weekend and have stepped up the car with some T2 RX-7 front brakes using Re-Speed (Thanks Sam!) front brakes and lines and a Junkyard 8.8 Mustang rear and brakes. Running Porterfield R4E's on all four corners and some tire rack close out (2007 production) Goodyear F1's and worn out Star Specs as spares. We had to flare the fenders to clear the 17X8 Mustang wheels. With the 3.27 rear ratio and taller tires we expect to be running 150 - 160mph if they give us the whole back straight.
We had to pull the fenders some for it to clear but we should be alright.
Some before and after pics below as well as the last set of pads we ran at the new years race.

Last couple pics. Being poo brown the car is nicknamed the Flyin Deuce or "Duece" as I mispelled it on the rear. Mr Hanky is on the hood scoop along with a winged golden turd.

Well, its got a v8 but since you bought it that way I won't hold it against you.
Looks like its a blast to drive. Should stop better now I bet.
I'm more interested in the progress on your spark yellow SA. When will you get that
project on here?

The blue GSL-SE is getting an LS1-T56. Hate me now?
Stops way better already.
Last update on the yellow car is driving it around the block as it kept dying. I need to replace the fuel filter and and start trouble shooting it then drive the bugs out. Last time it moved was being pushed further into the garage so the LS1 could fit behind it.

Hahaha. That actually made me laugh out loud.
The 79 is staying pretty much stock. A RB exhaust, some wheels and maybe a cleaned up nikki while keeping the stock stuff in the attic for re-installation if needed.
I do have two other 79's. Once is being prepped to be a driver for my friends son and the other a parts/ possible race car that I picked up a couple weeks ago for $200.

We started the race and about two hours in the clutch failed... Four hours later we were back on track. Then a rain delay. Another driver went out after the rain and ended up in a tire wall.
Needs new fogs, fenders and a header panel but otherwise is ok. There was a silver first gen and an IT7 running in exhibition with us. I was able to pass both without a problem. We ended up running 91 laps and a best lap time of 2.50 around Sebring full course.
Some pics from the weekend are attached and follow this link for some pro ones. I am the guy laying under the car and the one driving in most of the action shots. http://www.awolphoto.com/keyword/092...250369_DZRhkzz
