motor from GSL

.....................Motor was already removed from the GSL and no tranny but dont think we are needing it. Seller said motor still ran but was pretty weak so was removed for a V/8 swap..Notice the toyota in backround,,,it had an exhaust cut out switch on the 12a ported motor in it and was by far the loudest car ive ever heard..

..................Ok now fun starts by doing some wiring harness transplanting after removing most of what is burnt up, such as the whole dizzy which fired the plugs first try so must have done something right..I might add we have never worked on this type cars before, but I did do alot of researching here before I started which helped soooo much on just the dizzy swap.

................Ok now my Son decided to also just swap out carbs as the doner already had rats nest removed with what appears everything mostly plugged thats not used..So we then poured some gas in the carb and she fired right up and was very quiet and smooth untill it used what we poured in.We got fuel pump to pump to the carb but apparantly its gummed up as couldnt see any gas coming out throat of carb,so this basically where we are at now..Only things I can see that we going need that doner car was missing is a radiator and clutch masters cylinders

Looks cool! A parts car is always welcome - I just got one a year after owning mine and I wish I woulda had it the whole time.

Keep em coming! And try to get some higher-res pics, they help us see what's going on.

weather not good but did plug all vac ports around carb and couldnt get fuel to go through so read rats nest removal in archives which help some but since most of original nest is burnt up or missing makes it more challenging but uncapped float bowel vent and now pours fuel out into carb untill i tapp on it..so trying get another carb or lookin to rebuild this one but still difficult as im sure im needing some things to make it idle, like what do i need to do with the bowel vent (one closest to radiator?)

Also started building DLDFIS which will have dizzy locked and no trailing using burned dizzy..I removed one of the pickups (leading come to find out later) combined red and greens inside the dizzy and made new harness to go to the coils. All i need to finish is longer coil to plug wires and a fused fed relay. Unless using the trailing pick up wont work Ill buld using the good dizzy and gm HEI s..

Worked on 7 for several hours today and finally got enough seafoam ran through the carb that it ran at a high idle until it ran tank out of gas, so progress is being made and I sure like the sound of them rotors.Still looking for some input from members here about my direct fire mod Im building until then Im going to leave whats running it alone.

ran car for over an hour today, still have to have alot choke going to keep it running but I hope the seaform I put in the tank will cure it.None of the gauges work so I will track them down one at a time with temp.then oil pressure topping the list.Still waiting for a lil help from here on the direct fire im building but seems not many members read these build threads us average Joes are doin.

Donald, don't be discouraged by the lack of response. I've been reading your thread but have not responded as it seems you've got things need control.

I commend you for taking on a project with you son. Unfortunately my 3yr old daughter doesn't have much interest in cars.

Thanks alot Crazy was begiining to think I was typing to a wall..LOL..Well today my Son had to return to college but he wanted to hear car run one more time because he never knows how long untill he gets a chance to come home so even though been raining all day we go ahead with trying.. So I set choke to full pump 3 times on gas, turns over about 7 times and fires up. Look at my Son s big smile and he says SWEEEEET. We let it run a couple minites and then I start easing the choke off a litttle at a time until no choke and stll running (first time) then I begin to bring idle down with the adjustment screw until it finally dies and I say Good enough for today and close hood..

Really cool ur doing a father and son build. I owned a nice street port 12a 1985. Built the whole car myself. These cars are so simple and inexpensive. I know a nice setup for this car it's cheap reliable and fast. A lot of people like efi but its this car with its carb that would give 200,000+ miles of reliable performance.

Today picked up new clutch master, slave cylinders and line, and got them installed and bled. These were the hardest things to replace so far,the slave rod kept falling out so I wrapped some tape around the boot and rod to hold it in place.

The GSl rearend is gonna happpen, just at odds with my Son as to when,He wants to wait for warm weather and I want it done like yesterday. We spent all afternoon on it today, changed brake booster as heat from fire probably caused it to give no assit and doner seems to have fixed. We also swapped alternators and the choke cable and started trying to replace burnt oil pressure, level, and tempture wiring but doner wiring is incomplete so will have to reasearch more as to where these wires went originally or Im going to just run new lines to the guages. We did drive it down the highway a couples miles today too and seems very tight in the steering and pulls smooth in 5th gear with no bad viabrations other than the old flat sided tires, which with doners , and spare wheels and tires we should be able to get at least four decent ones.

Yesterday the secondaries were just pouring fuel when pump was on so looking into a rebuild kit .We moved onto bleeding the breaks without much success as left rear wheel cylinder is froze and right front caliper wont show hardly any pressure but driver side seems fine, so we worked on hood latch and cable for it.Son had to get back to campus to study for test so day eneded there.

Today went to pullapart and got and electric fan ( too deep to fit) A relay box with relays and wiring still attached. and 2 long coil to plug wires for the direct fire mod, which makes it start real good at full retard but slow to rev up but at full advance must open throttle fully to start but revs great the dizzy s advances are corrode froze so idk what im going to do guess just leave it as is 4 now..the secondaries pouring gas when pump on was stopped by uncapping bowel vent but didnt do this b4 when it was capped so im confused as what changed maybe we fixed some vac leaks but im going to leave it open 4 now as I dont know how its suppose to be.Some member input on this build would really help.

Sound like u might have ur vacuum advanced hooked to manifold vacuum. Try it without vacuum advance.
I also recommend a single msd box on the leading.

Have u done a compression test?

Worked yesterday on airpump and valve removal and made a blockoffplate but left lines running under car alone.Car started right up and after warming up for a while I got it Idling about 700 so I drove up the road and it ran really good but had very loud roar coming from underneath,so after looking and checking everything I found that the exhaust heat shield was rubbing driveshaft so i fixed that and roar was gone and car was pretty quiet.Today is raining but im hoping to get to do some more rewiring.
