I'm going to mount my fmic and the front bumper and see where I might be able to mount the tow hook. In my situation, I might have to custom make it. Either case, I'll take some pics and post on this thread. Who knows, It might help you and you might do the same thing.

Some I've seen, peopld have made a slit on the bumper to pass the two hook. I'm thinking I'll probably have to do that.

 

Let me know how the tow hook works out for you Phil. If you can design one out of cardboard I can get it custom cut from titanium or whatever metal we wish.

Thats kinda cool! But if you need something other than flat, it poses a problem. Cool link though! I've never seen that before.

 

Incorporate the bends laid flat in the design and have it bent when you receive it.

I tried to see if tow hook coould be mounted... So i put my IC on and Front bumper

Here is the area I'm thinking about adding (oil cooler opening, as FMIC completely fills up the front opening).


I think I could use the stock tow hook area to the rail and Just bend the metal to clear the bumper... Only concern I have is how it will all play with my upgraded Oil coolers. I think If I bend it near the bumper, It should be fine.

 

Phil, you're not planning on running dual oil coolers?

Btw, I'll contact Ray on monday to get the verdict on the dgrr sponsorship----he wants to do it, just needed verification from his boss.

thats one light weight tow hook!, j/k but have you thought of cutting a slit on the bumper?

 

I thought about just making or buying a straight tow hook and cut the bumper.. But because its so close to the edge of the curveture of the opening, I might have to make the opening large.. and also not much material will be left by the opening.. I don't know if I make sense..

 

yeah it makes sense more angle bigger hole.

 

I would just cut the bumper Phil and leave the tow hook straight and flat. Otherwise when yu do need it and the tow truck hooks up to it. The torque from the winch will very likely straighted the hook out some and **** up your bumper anyway.

True. But your talking about bending 1/4" stainless. Thats not easy to do it accurately.

 

Solid advice, though a thick gauge steel bend should hold up just fine. I think the oil coolers are going to be the deal makers/breakers.

I know... That idea did concern me... as if the tow hook straightens out when pulling my car, it will F*ck up the bumper and just beats the purpose of making one of these...

I agree. I'm not sure how the coolers will fit. I'm going to check that later on... I don't remember where I put them (still in the box somewhere.).

 

Most welding businesses have cutters and benders to handle 1/4" with no problem. Now cutting accurate designs with a plasma cutter is a different story.

 

That's when welded gussets come into play.

 

True, but once again that link was provided for people that might not have the connections for metal working. And if your buying it from ebay, you most likely can't get it bent, or you don't have the tools yourself! Why buy something off ebay when you can get it done locally - ya know!

And the link showed a CNC plasma cutter. Your not going to get much more accurate than that!

Phil, I'll try to find some pictures from the auto salon. IIRC, most of the circuit cars brought for display just cut through the bumper. It's what I would do...

I'd think a bumper is probably the least of your worries if you're being pulled that hard out from where you end up....are you planning on needing to use it???

 

So you can find someone local to do plasma cutting of any design for $5.50? NOPE! You won't find ANY place that will do plasma cutting for under the hourly shop rate which is usually about $45.
