The car is used for full sized circuits (I dont do any of the tighter autocross's over here) and being that its a BIG bridge port, the GT30 is a bit small for this car. The 35 is even a bit on the small size for it. To give you an idea, I get about 18psi from the T51R SPL at about 5k RPM so the motor has the ability to spool something on the large side fairly soon. I was thinking of something like a T04Z or a friend that well into his turbo tech suggested something like a 3794HTA.

Finally got an update on the turbo. It is away with a specialist in competition turbos we have here in NZ that has developed a few of his own tricks when it comes to modifying big brand/big performance turbos for a lot of drag cars and circuit/drift cars.

A new shaft is going into my T51R and one of his trick ceramic bearing sets. These have seen results recently on a circuit spec WRX running a GT35 and saw the turbo comming on boost 700PRM earlier without even touching the tune, among other similar results. So im looking foward to see what this mod, along with a manifold thats actually designed for the turbo (the last one was a divided manifold with a T4 flange I think, and a Vband adapter, so the turbulence would have been horrible!) can do.

Also got new belts (last ones expired) so I can get it road legal again. Should have it running and at least mobile with the old manifold and a stuffed turbo to I can take it up to the tuners for the new manifold to be built. Will be strange to have it back on the road for the first time in over 6 months =D.

Cheers guys. I have also just purchased my new suspension for the car. The handling has always held this this thing back so its good to finally get on top of it.

I have gone for the Fortune auto 500 series coilovers, 12kg front and 10kg rear springs, custom valving to suit and the racing beat front swaybar. Should be here mid Oct and will have the car on the dyno late Oct after the new manifold is built for a quick tune. Cant wait to see what these trick bearings in the turbo can do!

You have me worried though, I just dropped my motor into RE Sinclair for a rebuild and port job... F*&K!

Yeah it was in NZPC a few years back with the "LETHL7" plates on it.

Hmmm, I dont think I have been unfair in what I have said about that workshop. The pics themselves speak a thousand words. If its to late to pull out of the work, I would make a serious point to go and have a look at the motor before it all goes together. Best of luck with the build, I wouldnt wish my luck with them on anyone!

So I got the car going last weekend with the old manifold thats had a clean up and a slightly damaged second T51R core I had. First time its been running since Feb or whenever it was that it broke. Also built a new heatshield around the turbo in place of a beanie (pics to come).

Car ran well all weekend untill Sunday night when I took it for a drive at night (I think this is the first time Ive driven it in the dark since the rebuild/rewire) and on the way home, smelt a faint burning smell. Had a look for the source of the smell but couldnt find anything out of the ordinary....so just put it down to the new heat shield burning in.
Went to move it back to my lockup on Wed night and got about 15mins into the drive (again at night) and the car just completly died on the M way. No lights, no dash lights, no nothing. Complete electrical blackout. Towed it home and had a look over it last night.
I initialy thought I had stuffed something up and the load of the headlights and everything running at once was pulling to much current for the circuit breaker (weird because its a 140A breaker). Turns out the bolt that holds the main power feed cable from the battery to the fuse/relay board must have came slightly loose, causing resistance and generated enough heat to melt through one tiny wire that runs from the oil temp gauge sensor and short it. That was enough to energise the car and shut it all down.

Pulled it all out, replaced the damaged wire and improved a few little things, making sure nothing was anywhere near the big cable and put it back together......woooohooooo LIFE! The car is back to normal and no major damage to anything. The fuses did their job and the only issue now is the speedo is totaly off the clock hahahaha.

Oh the joy of working out the gremlins in a new build!!! =S.

I got the turbo back from the local turbo guru and put it on the car. Sent the car up to Pulse Performance for a cleanup on the tune and to get some other bits and pieces done that I couldn't be bothered doing. They repacked the mufflers that were completely empty which gave the car a nicer note, fixed a leak in the sump and replaced a fire damaged fuel line that I missed after the scatter blanket caught fire at the track last time I raced it.

They put the car on the dyno and one the first pull had to add a fair amount of fuel to it which raised eyebrows. Pulled the plugs and it looked leaner on the rear rotor. Sent the injectors away to be tested and they came back fine. WEIRD. Compression is perfect and nothing else looks out of place.

Back on the dyno with 5% more fuel to the rear and the plugs look nice and happy. Car seems to be runnin better then ever and made a healthy 493hp at the rears on the same boost it had. Ill go race it next weekend and take it back for a check up to make sure the fueling it ok then chuck some avgas into it and up the boost some more. Should be fun!

Dyno plot below:

do you have your old dyno graph for comparison on spool with the new turbo work done?

I cant find the old graph, but Ive asked for one to be emailed to me so will post that up as soon as I get it. I'm really interested to see if there is an improvment. It feels like there is, but that might just be that I've forgotten what it felt like.

Finally remembered to post the old Dyno sheet. Looks like a fairly good improvment in spool =D

NEW

This is all on our 98RON fuel which is crap.

Its booked in for a Avgas (100 actane) tune next month so that should be fun =P

Been a bit slack with updating this thread lately.

The car was on the dyno before xmas for an avgas tune, in what was meant to be preparation for a track round just gone. Got a call on the Friday evening before I was meant to pick it up, saying they had ran into issues. The car was tuned on pump gas at whatever the fuel pressures always been. They got half way through the avgas tune (starting with lower boost and working their way up). Got to about 22psi and it ran out of injectors at 6000rpm. Checked fuel pressure and it was at about 32-34 psi.....guess its always been on the low side but was never an issue until now when it needed more fuel.

So they had to up the fuel pressure to 40-42 where it should be and that meant they had to start again.....AND we have to redo the pump gas tune because I cant be bothered changing fuel pressure every time I change fuels.

So I opted for them to just hang onto the car and do it right. No point cutting corners for one trackday.

Pulse have been seeing some strange things with their dyno numbers reading low on the last 5 cars they have had on their (some of which havn't changed since they were last on the dyno) and a lot of people said the numbers were low at power cruise where they ran the dyno comp, so I wouldn't take the numbers as gospel. The dyno may be in need of a calibration or something. They also mentioned the semi slicks arnt the best tyre to use on the dyno and they were struggling to stop it wheel spinning.

They tuned it up on Avgas to 22psi and it made 512hp atw and feels a HELL of a lot quicker. We could have gone as high as 25psi, but I opted for a bit less power in favour of keeping it a bit further away from the "edge" so to speak...especially keeping in mind its gonna be on boost a lot more often on the track then a drag car would.

They tidied up the pump gas tune on the reset fuel presure and managed to get a bit more power out of it on its pump tune to. On 16psi it made 465hp atw....which is about the same as last time on that boost, but its last run at power cruise was the same power on 18psi (it made 493 on 18psi a couple of months back so I would take the dyno number with a grain of salt). Even on pump it feels a fair bit faster then it was so overall im pretty happy.

I also got the new suspension in last week. Was easy enough to put in and all looks like its pretty good quality. The only issue I had was the adjusters hit the bonnet in the front so I had to drill some holes in the frame underneath.

I have set the car up about half an inch lower to see how it feels but I think it might be a tad TOO low so will have a play with this at the next test day.

Pics:

I also got sick of cleaning oil off my nice clean motor so I mocked up a much bigger catch can. Will weld it up over the next few days.

The car is now also for sale over here for anyone that might be interested in checking out the auction.

Can you take pics of where you had to drill to fit the adjusters up front?
