My Black FD Track spec build up - 56k stay away =P
I thought I would post up a build thread for my track spec'd FD, partly because I thought some might be interested, and partly so I can keep track of it all myself (and you guys can keep me motivated  )
I purchased the car as a drag spec street car in the following spec: 1996 Series 7 RX7 Exterior: Panneled and resprayed in deep black RE Amemiya side skirts and JTC spec rear wing After market front bar DTM 18x9s and 18x8s Interior: Recovered Bride seat Gauges, wheel etc etc Apexi Power FC ecu HKS Boost controller KHS turbo timer Engine: 13b bridge port New Rotor Housings Drilled oil gallieres Dowelled Block Balanced Eccentric shaft and Rotors Milled Rotors with 3mm Lenniti Ceramic Apex Seals Remote oil filter Alloy pulleys HKS turbo manifold Greedy external wastgate HKS T51R SPL Turbo Blitz intercooler RE Sinclair compression tube Greedy Type R BOV HKS Exhaust Bosh lift pump Serge tank Twin bosh 044 main pumps Twin fuel lines to alloy fuel rails 4 x 1680 Bosch indy blue injectors Mallory FPR HKS Twin power ignition amp Driveline: Custom Billet Flywheel Triple plate quartermaster clutch Strengthened S7 gearbox Shotshifter Strengthened power plant frame Mazdaspeed LSD 4.8 ratio Custom made chromemolly axles Adjustable rear suspention arms Coilovers Vented and Cross drilled RS brake rotors Factory calipers Car had two tunes, street tune of 480 RWHP on 98RON and a C16 tune of 650 RWHP The car has gone 10.6@131mph by the builder on groved slicks. https://i242.photobucket.com/albums/...3122008217.jpg https://i242.photobucket.com/albums/...3122008212.jpg https://i242.photobucket.com/albums/...PandTorque.jpg https://i242.photobucket.com/albums/...HPandBoost.jpg |
I then started with the conversion into a track spec car.
A Racetech 4009 and 5point harness for the drivers side and a 6point cage. http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...8012009245.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...5012009270.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...5012009264.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...2012009282.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...2012009286.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7012009306.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/IMG_9420.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/IMG_9417.jpg |
I then put some better looking wheels on 18x8.5 and 18x9.5 and cleaned up the engine bay a bit (including a bloody filter on that dahm expencive turbo that the previous owner thought he didnt need)

Next up - Hit the track for some testing and won a Dyno comp at a local show with it running like ass.

Now comes the fun part. I took the car to a new tuner closer to home to tidy up the tune and sort of the running rich and like general crap issues.
On the way to the tuner the rear diff bound up and smashed itself to bits  . We pulled it apart and found that the place that build the car has no idea how to shim a diff....bugger. New Mazdaspeed diff was purchased and set up correctly. The car then went on the dyno and started tuning. On pump gas, he got the curve looking MUCH better with the help of some smaller primarys (went from 1680s to 1000s). At base boost of 10psi it was running like a dream, then on 12 PSI the whole motor self destructed :(. We pulled it down and FARRRK ME that workshop should NEVER be let near another motor again. It was a total mungrel of a motor. The bridgeporting was terrible, it has actilly cut into the waterseal, and the 3mm slots on the rotors were OFF CENTRE . The motor was so stuffed that I painted it and it now sits in my lounge as a ornament haha. The seals also went through the T51R and distroyed the turbine so a replacment CHRA was needed. http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_3508.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_3507.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_3496.jpg Look how missmatched the housings are compared to the plates http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_3495.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_3493.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_4080.jpg |
I then did some number crunching and found I could come up with the cash for a proper build.
I got the new motor built by Pulse Performance Race Engineering here in NZ (they are responcible for Mad Mikes Quad rotor MADBUL FD driftcar you may know of) and I could not be happier with their work. Warren is a legend, friendly as hell and his work is like art!. I went with a 13B bridge port, Dowled, hi rev mods, everything balanced, oil galeries enlarged, new mazda 2mm seals (he swears by them) etc etc. Got the motor in and run in before xmas 09 and then decided to start on what Im currently working on. Warren likes the Microtech and wanted a LT10s running his motor, so I sold the Power FC and went about wireing in the microtech and thought.....theres a lot of excess crap in here. So I rewired the whole car and moved all the relays and fuses into the cabin. I am also in the process of getting rit of anything under the bonnet thats not needed and replacing all the lines with braided stuff etc. http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_4084.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_4249.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/IMG_0032.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/IMG_0028.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/IMG_0097.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/IMG_0098.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_4369.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_5074.jpg |
I removed the OMP and blocked off the injectors etc as the car runs premix only
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_5078.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_5076.jpg |
I have sent off all the parts under the hood to get powder coated in something like this:

Coils mounted thanks to my cool new tool
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_5084.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_5082.jpg |
Got rit of those UGLY lights and went back to stock =D

I started on the breather setup the other day. I had to make a pipe for the breather on the right side as the wastgate is in the way of using a flange and 90* -10 fitting. Will be similar to Damians setup when finished but with a custom made catch tank and filler neck.

I got to work on the dash last week and removed the gauges from on top of the dash and went from 4 to two and a microtech dash. The blue box is a lap timer and switches are launch control and a pit lane speed limiter. The ugly cut out aloy will be replaced with carbon when I get around to cutting it out.

I have now, in the last day or two, received all the parts to replace the oil cooler lines and made a start installing them. Finished pics will be up this weekend.
I put up a post with all the listed parts needed to do this if anyones interested: https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/braided-power-steer-lines-oil-cooler-lines-anyone-done-them-893188/ http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_5363.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_5360.jpg |
This is how the car currently sits. The bumper is having ducting to the intercooler/radiator and oil coolers made this weekend and I am going to make a front splitter and have it all attached with quick release fixings for easy replacment.
I moved the oil coolers foward a bit to sit better aligned to the bumper vents and alow a bit better flow through without the overflow/washer bottle just blocking the back. I also covered my LIM last night with heat sheild becuase of how close it sits to the exhaust. If this doesnt keep temps down, I will get it ceramic coated. http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_5354.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSC_5368.jpg |
I will keep updating this thread as I make progress and will hopefully have some vids out on the track in the next few months. :egrin:
Let me know what you think, or if you have any suggestions  |

Great work and very interesting thread. |
Good stuff man!! build looks great... ever thought of going V-mount IC RD set-up? just curious for optimum cooling? Also if you don't mind could you pm me how much you spent on the Pulse Performance motor? thanks!
|
wow looks awesome! Any plans for the suspension setup? Do you know exactly whats in there at the moment?

Looks nice man!
Who built the orignal motor with the poor porting? (Im based in Chch, just looking to see what shops have a good rep, saw you had it dynoed at RE Sinclair) |
everything looks great!

I have thought of going V mount but all the gear I have is for a front mount, and with proper ducting out the hood it will hopefully give a little downforce in the front that way. Cooling has never been an issue so I dont really need to go through all the work to change to V.
Suspention - Its currently got some Jap coilovers in it that are doing the job for now. Im going to pull the springs and get them weighted and have the valving checked, but these will be replaced at some point. I will also be looking at alignment and swaybars using a pyrometer at the track to dial these in. The brakes are my biggest concern at the moment. I cant stop the thing from 220+kms. Its a bit scary heading towards a wall with massive brake fade. Im going to try some decent ducting first (its pad fade Im getting from overheating) and if that doesnt work.....some big 8 pots on the front and 4 or 6 on the rear. The car is the ex LETHL7 built by RE sinclair. I know they have some great cars out there, but if this is what their motors are like......I wouldnt spend $1 with them. PPRE are definitly the way to go in NZ for a built rotor. |
Wow. great recovery on this car. I'm surprised the old motor made 650whp... especially with the twin power ignition...

It made just shy of 600whp on Speedtechs Dyno (see the above sheet) when it started running like CRAP. so the 650 on a rolling road is pretty believable. Another car that was tuned by them made about 20kw more on the same speedtech dyno, so I dont thing RE Sinclairs reads high at all. It did drive like a bat out of hell on race gas lol . And the trap speed backs up that power. |
well, seeing that much power from the hks twin power is rare. Cudos again for an awesome bill. Please keep your thread up to date Tursty.
