Lower the age of consent! FD

Title gotcha huh?

Anyway. I bought my 93 R1 from a guy a couple weeks ago and learning about a handful of the issues the car has. Here's the thread if anyone wants to read it and maybe find something that's eye brow raising.

http://rotarycarcl ub.com/rotary_forum/showthread.php?t=13364

So here's how it looked when I picked it up.

Fast and furious body kit, rat poop, and expired tags. Trade marks of a greater era of the rx7.

Anyway, guy had be trying to unload this car for over a year and said it only ran on one rotor and figured it was blown or something. Well, I've had my experiences with the "one rotor" FD problem and felt the opportunity to pounce. I offered 8.5k for this car that had 160k on the clock.. he took it. I came up on the car, started it... ran like ****.. kept my gas on the giggle pedal at 3krpm and then it finally came alive.. dude probably just had fouled plugs. I made off like a bandit. Got those volk GTS wheels which I've really grown to liking too.

Anyway, quick highlight of the parts.

blown tien streets
99 spec twins ported and seq delete running at 17psi (says he's making near 400hp... but I'm extremely dubious.. maybe 350whp)
water meth
Haltech
a marine style battery cut off (lol?)
a fairly decent exhaust
and a rebuilt motor with less than 10k.

The bad stuff, dude has his negative battery line running parallel to the freaking fuel lines.

Wiring leaves much to be desired.

Tune is complete crap, getting 8mpg highway

and the kit hurts my face.

Cleans up nice though

Did a little gentlemanly motoring against a GTO that puts down about 390whp and I barely pulled on him, mostly because he roasted his tires. But dead even accel from 70mph and up. Never seen anything like that before, no edging nothing.. completely even.

That's what leads me to believe this thing isn't at 400whp.. or near it. If it was, I'd be burning this suckuh.

So we took it to my friends shop and put it on a lift to check it out. Found a little issues, but otherwise I walked away like a bandit from this deal.

Bought an OEM rear bumper

And just bought a 99 spec bumper which I gotta pick up next week.

Then saving a little bit of cash to send to paint. Next item is either Tien monoflex or a single turbo kit.

Goals with this build is primarily track car. I understand 350whp is about the limit for reliability on this things for road racing and that's all I desire. I want to do away with the water/meth if possible since it isn't legal for wheel to wheel for NASA. So looking at efficient single turbos that work for me (worth noting I have a monster sized FMIC, probably the biggest I've ever seen in person). I'd also like the possibility of upping the HP to 400 for the street for... research purposes...

Turbos I've been looking at is the T04R, EFR 7860 (I believe that's the right number) if I'm feeling rich blooded, or whatever else anyone can suggest.

Going to eventually just shrink the wheels down to 17s, probably RPF1s for the track and shove as much as possible under there.

I have a chance to pick up a set of ohlins for a grand. Can't seem to find much on these although the guy isn't sure if these are DFV or PVC.

Input?

Springrates are 12.5/10

They look like PCV's although I dont know if the PCV's have the adjustment damper **** on the bottom for the front coils.
I have the DFV and they are on top.

Lower the age of consent! FD-32susyw.jpg

Looks like I'm set suspension wise unless I may need a sway bar (will find out when I go to my first track day).

Next up, GT35r and a tune!
Then.. BODYSHOP!!

Got a new driver seat (well old... ish)

I'll be putting this in for track days and stuff, don't really intend to keep it in for daily purposes. Probably going to keep saving to grab another. Never really had much of a problem with bride seats and I think the gradient pattern looks awesome.

So, as luck would have it. Got rear ended friday after work.

Completely the other guys fault, I get the inspector tomorrow so we'll check the total value then.

But after a quick look it seems less intense than I thought. Lower control arm is bent to ****, upper tie rod is snapped. Subframe shifted forward although nothing seems to be bent. The strut mount for the coilover has slightly changed, it's off 4 degrees compared to the otherside. The wheels is strongly rubbing against the body and the door gap on the passenger side is shortened (although still totally operational) with a little bent in the rocker.

So we shall see.

But these work wheels are strong as ****. Looks like the spokes are still ROCK solid. Might just have to buy new barrels.

Probably looking at walking out of this with a fair amount of money in my pocket.

Haha it's all good, I'm not entirely too worried about it. We'll see how much I can get from the insurance and to get it back on the road.

But this means I can install my bumpers and get it repainted like I was planning on all in one go. So sa-wheeeet

Oh wow, so it's been a while since an update happened. Ok.

So I got the insurance to value the car at 21k and the damages came out to 14.5k so I'm good.

So the car got picked up to go to the shop about 3-4 months ago.

So I was pretty stoked. Then the shop tells me a few parts they need, they need to wait on Mazda Japan to re-manufacture since there aren't anymore in the states. So it's mostly been sitting at that shop for this entire time. It's insanely frustrating.

Found a wheel shop that works absolute magic.

from that toooooo....

So I'm pretty impressed, guy fixed it up for 200 bucks. They couldn't find barrels so they ended up finding another pair of Volks that we toast and welding that lip on. It isn't a perfect match (it's super close, the lip is just slightly softer) but you'll never tell unless someone told you. I plan on ordering a new lip down the road if it irritates me enough and having them redo it with the right lip. (really like these wheels).

Fitted a doner wheel while the busted taco wheel was getting fixed.

And they finally started working on it last week.

While the FD is at the shop. I'm having them replace some interior pieces as well (vents and cracked door handles), source me a bumper support bar, fit the 99 spec bumper, repaint the whole thing (a slightly nicer red), tune the suspension on it.

After all that is done. I get it back then I install a GT35r with the HKS twin power ignition system. Since I have LS coils on the trailing plugs, but the OEM coils for the leading. Which I've heard isn't the best mix in the world.

How in the world did you get insurance to value a 160k mile FD at 21k?

What was really cool was there just happened to have been like... 9 FD rx7s of the same color with similar mileage pop up on craigslist asking ~25k within 200 miles.

You know, what a coincidence.

Glad to see you're repairing it instead of ditching it. Which wheel shop did you end up going to? My Volks need a refresher!

If you go to NADA the value no longer takes into consideration the mileage of the vehicle due to its age. 99.9% of insurance companies value vehicles using NADA and then deduct value for wear and tear or prior damage. Mine has a current NADA value of 20,100.00. I would of course argue that and then the insurance company would do a comparables search like his did and find its worth more.

Chrome brokers in Corona. It's kind of a hole in the wall shop and it's a little sketchy. But they did such an excellent job. The FD is getting repaired at an extremely well known body shop that deals strictly with high end cars, exotics, and specific classics and they're gonna keep using them since the shop was so spot on. It's great.

Ehh, they originally pitched me 14k as the value of the car. Hahaha

Was it Progressive or Geico? Those are two of the worst insurance carriers in the US. That is exactly why you never except the first offer and request a market search... like they ended up doing. Im glad to hear you made out well and the car will be fixed!

They made that quarter panel replacement a lot harder than it needed to me! Instead of hacking it in at the door opening they should have gone all the way to the pinch weld and re spot welded it. Now there will be filler on the corner.

On another note, what roll cage is that?
